I think it should have ended with the penultimate scene.
Elaine: Oh, come on, Viktor. It's not a death sentence
Viktor: No. It's life.
*their limo drives away while the paparazzi continue to pursue them*
The last scene with Simone's return to the Frank Brand show, the introduction of her son Chip, and her considering becoming a politician, seemed tacked on. Like a sequel hook, even although a sequel wouldn't have made sense.
Or, alternatively, give Viktor the death sentence.
You know what's really funny? Everybody casts so much derision on the "typical Hollywood happy ending" that Hollywood puts out a score or so of movies every year with tragic or just dull and mildly depressing endings every year, just so that they won't be the dreaded happy ending. And then everybody goes right on saying that Hollywood always does happy endings.
It's as fake as Simone ever was.
I disagree with you, but I'm pretty sure you're not Hitler.
- Jon Stewart
That's actually not really funny.
