boring?

Don't get me wrong, I actually love movies that make you think. American Beauty and Mystic River are in my personal top 10. However, in this movie just nothing seems to happen. I mean the acting is good and some lines are nice, but...NOTHING HAPPENS. I was waiting for this guy to explode, after all he lost his wife and his dougher is marrying a moron. It might be more realistic the way the movie goes on, but watching an old man think for 2 hours is not exactly what I call entertainment.

A movie like this will absolutely not be appreciated by or interesting for everybody. I can understand that some find it boring. There is no point trying to convince you and similar people otherwise. Try watching it again when you're 60. Some may see it differently then. For me - and apparently many others - it was the most touching movie I have seen in many years. It convinced me that Hollywood can still produce real cinema and not just shiny but hollow standard movies. But it's impossible to make a movie that pleases everybody.

Of course it is not entertainment. It is art.

You can be entertained by American Pie, wrestling, Miss Universe or reality shows or whatever new shallow thing American producers might invent and sell the licence to the rest of the world (so they can reach the level of average American audience). But, thank God, art is still legal and not extinct yet.

I didn't think this movie was boring at all. And I find a lot of movies really really boring. Like Fracture. Wow, you can't force me to sit through that again. Or Phantom of the Opera. Yikes.

Damn, I made the apple too big again.

I guess you missed the part where he started to trash the house and attacked his friend then?

The film was slow-paced. Stuff did happen.
I can name lots of films where nothing happened. What were you looking for? A love story? A dramatic death? A road trip? A shocking nude scene? Humor? Absurdity? Parrallels of real life? Thought provoking subject matter?
Wait..wait...! All of that actually happened in this film!
What more do you want?

I agree the pace was slow. No big deal.

American Beauty and Mystic River

So those are the movies that made you think? Really? Two Noughties movies are the ones that made you think? No Bergman, Ozu, Mizoguchi, Bresson, Tarkovsky, etc,etc

Your point is dismissed.

By the way Schmidt is a pretty good and entertaining movies, off course any people used to explosions and michael bays craps will find this quite unetertaining.

NOTHING HAPPENS. I was waiting for this guy to explode, after all he lost his wife and his dougher is marrying a moron.

What happens is the transition of Warren from a lifeless machine - in the beginning of the film, to a human being wanting to live, at the end.
That drawing of a little boy holding the mother's hand at the end of the film, was not that orphan kid Warren was fostering, it was Warren himself desiring to be reborn - note that there was no mother+father in that drawing, but only an adult that could be a mother, but doesn't have the attributes of one - no long hair (no hair at all, no breasts, only a slight indication of a robe) and connected to him/her like from an umbilical cord, a little boy.

Schmidt went through a series of explosions, which torn him apart:
realization that his work at that company was futile, meant nothing.
realization that his marriage was a lie.
realization that his daughter was not his legacy, but a complete stranger.
realization that he has no power to fix what was broken in his life.
realization that his life was nothing, and that he is nothing (like everybody else)

I'd say your mind refused to register these chilling explosions, to protect itself from such awful truths.
