I'd always assumed since Sullivan was a hit man himself and supposed to be very good then he'd recognise someone who was effectively stalking him.
shareInstinct. Jude Law's demeanor, teeth, aura etc. It's like some policeman may use training and experience to establish probable cause that someone committed a crime; Hanks used his training and experience to deduce that Jude Law was a hitman.
The context also helped. Hanks knew the higher-ups were coming for him. So he knew a hitman was a realistic possibility.
I second this. It was all in Maguire's eyes as well. Sullivan saw it. I always been able to tell when certain dudes were up to no good before they made a move. The same with Sullivan. And he had to keep a lookout following the killings, which caused him to react to anything suspicious.
