How did Michael Sullivan Sr. Know?

How did Mike Sullivan know that Owen's character was sent to kill him? I know he was studying him in the dinner but what gave it away? Mere instincts?

reply

I meant how did he know Jude Law's character was sent to kill him not Owen's.

reply

Its cleared up better in the book, he recognizes Jude's teeth.

reply

Exactly what about his teeth? I have not read the book and really have no plans to.

reply

I thought that too. He gave a very hard look after he saw his teeth. I just assumed people had talked about him before as a freelance hitman and mentioned how bad his teeth were.

reply

Bump.

What was Sullivan able to deduce from seeing bad teeth?

reply

I'd always assumed since Sullivan was a hit man himself and supposed to be very good then he'd recognise someone who was effectively stalking him.

reply

Instinct. Jude Law's demeanor, teeth, aura etc. It's like some policeman may use training and experience to establish probable cause that someone committed a crime; Hanks used his training and experience to deduce that Jude Law was a hitman.

The context also helped. Hanks knew the higher-ups were coming for him. So he knew a hitman was a realistic possibility.

reply

I second this. It was all in Maguire's eyes as well. Sullivan saw it. I always been able to tell when certain dudes were up to no good before they made a move. The same with Sullivan. And he had to keep a lookout following the killings, which caused him to react to anything suspicious.

reply

Yep --- Always keeping in mind that was his job, seeing through people
