Condom use

I noticed something strange. The first time they have sex, they use a condom. The second time,
they don't. The third time, she says to him, 'Not like this; use a condom.'
Did that alternation between condom use and unprotected sex have something to do with when she had her period? Or is it something deeper that symbolizes the stage their relationship went through?
