Fish hooks (spoilers)

So swallowing a bunch of fish hooks and then ripping them up out of your stomach is a good way to commit suicide? He could have just put a bunch of rocks in his clothes, dove into the water and taken a huge breath. That'd be a hell of a lot less agonizing. What a moron!
