Could have been a great movie

but it's just an average one because it does not have any cinematic artistry. If Park, Chan Wook or Christopher Nolan took this movie, it would have been a classic. I see so much potential. A great screenplay given away to an average director. Bad luck.

Yeah, I found the script and characters far more engaging than the direction itself. Haneke's direction wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything special either. His tendency to use long, unbroken takes and simple, static shots made for an appropriately uncomfortable viewing at times, while also being needlessly slow and boring at others. Overall, his direction is competent, yet hardly inspired.

I agree it could have perhaps used a better director. Park Chan-wook would've probably done a bang up job with it. Not sure about Nolan, though. Roman Polanski, David Fincher, Francis Ford Coppola (in his prime), Martin Scorsese, David Lynch, David Cronenberg, PTA, or even Damien Chazelle could've also probably done better.
