Not a romantic comedy

Where was the romance? It makes absolutely no sense to categorize it as that. Bridget is disgusting, revolting, whatever you'd like to call it. This film is not by any means romantic, it's just a mash of crap in my opinion. 'Cum in face'-remarks, 'blowjob'-remarks, whoring around, vodka, smoke and so on. Don't misunderstand me, I am not offended by movies including such factors, I am simply astonished by the fact that this movie apparently is seen as romantic and therefore a part of that genre, combined with comedy, even though it's crystal clear that there's almost no romance here. No believable romance anyway (the last 5-10 minutes are destroying the *beep* completely).
It's a 'comedy' but that's it.

Why would Mark be interested in someone like her anyway? It makes no sense. He seemed like an alright guy, and she was being disgusting and uncharming the whole movie. They're just trying to tell an unbelievable story; no girl is that retarded and revolting given that she had actual feelings and being a decent person.

Having all that said, I didn't find it particularly funny either, but that's another case entirely.

Mark Darcy is btw beyond boring. His facial expressions barely surpasses that of Steven Seagal. I am befuddled, no actually bewildered by girls who find this man attractive and lovable on screen. Then again I am not a girl and well, girls have poor taste in men (and yes, so does men when it comes to girls). It's a clash of fail.

I had avoided the film in 2001 and only watched it because of the publicity surrounding the new one. I usually like Renee Zellweger but found her thoroughly unlikable in BJD. I thought the story was going to be about a woman in her 30's who was going to make changes in her life like giving up booze and smoking and making positive lifestyle changes like regular exercise. However, that's not the direction the story took: she continues to booze it up and does nothing about her weight throughout, and is improbably pursued by strikingly handsome men. It seemed to me to be a fantasy an overweight girl in her 30's might actually daydream about. The dialogue for me was only intermittently amusing. The success of this film and the Bridget Jones character utterly escapes me.

What culture did you grow up in?

The movie is by every and all means completely romantic. It is also a comedy. Therefore, "romantic comedy". If it went over your head, you are the King of the Clueless.
