REVISITING 20 YEARS LATER: "How can you be nearly headless?"

I noticed this almost back when I first saw it in 2001, but Harry is absolutely new to the Wizarding World and everything about it in general when he first enters Hogwarts, yet when Hermione asks this question of Nearly Headless Nick, he ROLLS HIS EYES at it, yet still reacts in a horrified manner when Nick pulls off his head, stopping short of some uncut flesh on his neck holding it on.

Why did the filmmakers allow that eye-rolling reaction in?

Maybe he thinks Hermione is being rude?

He doesn't like Hermione at that point, thinks she's a bossy know-it-all jerk. He'd roll his eyes if she asked for the salt.

I never thought of it that way, completely forgot that for a teeny tiny fraction of the entire Potter saga, Hermione was NOT friends with them, I suppose I just think of them as friends for life, it's been that way for so long. Thank you.

Better yet, why was know-it-all Hermione the one asking the question? Shouldn't she have known all about him?

reply

Well, Hermione is Muggle-born, so it's possible she didn't know as much as Ron, same with Harry. But she would be swotting up with books like Hogwarts: A History (from Diagon Alley) after she got her acceptance letter, and she does mention the book, so she must've prepared herself well for all the stuff in the school before she even got there.
