The drowning in the bathtub

Could somebody please explain to me what the heck the drowning in the bathtub was all about? That was Tsukiko, right? I thought she died, then she's suddenly in the doctor's office with Tomie in the next scene. What was with the bathtub thing?

reply

No, I think that was her friend that was hooking up with Tsukiko's boyfriend. Maybe I'm wrong though. O_O

I think he's referring to when Tsukiko's landlord shoves her head into a sink and tries to drown her. Tsukiko's friend Kaori is already dead. When Tsukiko walks in, Kaori's body is right in front of her.

Besides, not everybody always dies from attempted drowning. Some just pass out and get water in the lungs but can be resuscitated. It doesn't always mean someone will die.

I think that's it. But what I don't get is the big usual Why?... Perhaps there is no reason for the scene, wouldn't be the first time, but I think I should understand it. Anybody made up a reason for the whole drwoning-thing? Was he possesed or did he know too much or what? Got a feeling that's also the point the OP was asking for.

Suicide is the most sincere form of self-criticism.

the bathtub scene served two purposes: (1) it reinforced the idea that tomie could control men, and (2) the trauma caused some of tsukiko's memories to return, notably the large number of 'demon girl' pictures ...

just before that scene, dr. hosono was called by the detective, who told her about the deaths of the restaurant workers and tomie's resume. dr. hosono rushed to tsukiko's house ... you can hear her calling out just as the scene ends. we can surmise that she finds tsukiko in the tub, resuscitates her, and takes her to her clinic. apparently, tomie and saiga go to the clinic and kill dr. hosono. we can only guess that tomie knew tsukiko would be there.

we (the audience) have been unconscious with tsukiko through all of this.

I didn't get the impression that the landlord had been under Tomie's influence at all. It just didn't seem connected. And anyway, after we see Tsukiko drowned in that scene, we see her again at the clinic - without any sort of explanation. And while she's at the clinic, there is also a cut back to the apartment complex's exterior, where the police are carrying out a body - we don't get to see which one. Nevermind how the police were alerted to the scene, but the whole thing is a mess. It looks like they had made two separate endings and somehow tried to use both. I haven't read the manga, so there are way too many holes here that needs filling for me to be able to make heads or tails of any of this.
