I really don't have anything new to add to the lengthy debate, but there is just one thing that has irked me the whole time. Lestat is a French nobleman right? And I know the movie has to be in English but what happened to his French accent? Whe I speak French I have an English/American accent, so it would only make sense that he would have a French accent. Now that I think about it, I don't think TC had the accent right and I KNOW ST didn't either.

But reservations aside, I am definitly a Stuart fan.

reply

As somebody already stated before, Lestat himself said in The Vampire Lestat (the novel by Anne Rice), that he had an accent "somewhere between a french noble man and a New Orleans river boat man." AND as a matter of fact Townsend HAD an accent in the movie. It didn't have to be a french accent. By the way, he lived enough to develop a perfect prononciation for each langague spoken on the Earth. ;-) I speak french, and generally I have no accent... :-)

As for the topic: Townsand himself was a superb Lestat, but Cruise was very good too as an evil Lestat seen trough the eyes of Louis. Maybee Townsend was a little better. There's a difference however between the quality of the two films: Interview is superb, Queen is rather crapish. (There is some very good scenes in Queen too, but the whole feels poorly written...) It's a shame for Queen, because the actors were generally pretty good. I hope, that they will make a new movie someday with the full story of The Vampire Lestat, or a TV serie with the whole Vampire Chronicles besides of this laughable crap Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the even more bullsh*tty Angel.

reply

okay, so I get how he could develop any accent he wants after 200 years. But when Marius first kidnaps him, he still speaks with a British accent (or whatever, I'm not really a linguist).

reply

Tom Cruise is way better. Stuart's Lestat sucked big time, the acting was bad and the movie BOMB at the boxoffice. They should never EVER make another Lestat movie because that's insulting to Tom and Anne Rice's novels. I'm sorry to all of Stuart's and QOTD's fans out there, but that is the truth and you're gonna have to accept it...

reply

I think they both did good jobs. As someone has pointed out, they are almost suposed to be two different characters. Tom Cruise did have the blond hair, but I thought he looked too old to be Lestat. Stuart Townsend lacked the blond hair, but I found that he portrayed Lestat better. The way he moved and so on just seemed to jump out at me as perfect. Tom had most of Lestat's character down, but seemed a little bit off, yes he did an excellent job, but I liked Stuart better. Some people here just seem to like Tom better cuz they hated the Queen of the Damned movie, The way I see it, you need to just lay back and pretend that it's not the book you read, and you would love it, That's what I had to do.

reply

First of all, I LOVED IWTV!! It was a million times better than QOTD, but the way Tom portrayed Lestat really bugged me. I wished he would die every second of the film, but if that's a bad thing or a good I'm not sure : )
Stuart was the only good thing about QOTD, he was so beautiful and Sexy!! Which I think is very important to the character, Tom just looked old and retarded with the blonde hair! (Although he was actually very HOT in Collateral)
So I have to go with Stuart! You really can't blame him for a bad script...

reply

I just have to say that I looked at Anne Rice's site and she wrote:
"I met Stuart Townsend, the young man who is playing Lestat an he was absolutely charming. He had Lestat's excellent speaking voice and his feline grace."
So I guess she thought he would make a good Lestat (at least before it was finished, LOL).

reply

i would have to say Stuart townsend. imho i have seen his movies that he was just starting out I think he turned out to be a great actor. Tom C has been around for a long time so yes he is more comfortable w/ the camera but I still like Stuart overall as lestat.

You know...I am shocked to come into this message board and see that people had actually chosen Stuart Townsend over Tom Cruise as the "better" Lestat. Anne Rice has taken me into treacherous and thrilling journeys with her Vampire Chronicles. Lestat is by far my favorite character in all of literature and I believe that Tom Cruise has taken me the closest into the true character. This performance of his has changed my opinion of this actor forever since I use to think of him as a terrible "Top Gun" actor. When I saw IWTV at the theater I was enthralled with his captivating performance and I was to the point of tears. When I had heard that WB was going to film "Queen of the Damned" (a combination of TVL and QOTD) I was jumping out of my skin. When I finally saw it I almost vomited. The writing, since Anne Rice did not write the screenplay, was terrible, the acting all around was atrocious, and Stuart Townsend didn't bring forth my beloved Lestat as Tom had done. I doubt Townsend even read one of her books.

Now to get to the other posts I have read, I cannot stand what IMDB.com has become. I feel as though "teeny boppers" are beginning to take over this website. Most people who place posts onto all of the boards talk as though they are 16-year-old girls. I am just very disappointed and will keep my distance from this sight as much as possible. Thank you and goodnight.

Do you know why they are talking like 16 y.o. girls. Because they are , my young one! :-)

amen. Thank you Marius

If there would be a remake of QOTD movie, meaning what QOTD was supposed to be after TVL with the legend of the twins story, vampire genesis, baby jenks!mekare Anthony Hopkins as MAGNUS! and minus the black hair Lestat, no awful jess lestat love story, no awful speeding vampire moves, no dancing snake charmer queen and best of all no Lestat able to walk the sun(as if he really could).

Would fans of this **so called movie*..object? I know I would not, for as much as AR wants her books to be done faithfully this would be her dream come true..and to fix the damage this movie has done for sure ;)

reply

actually i cant see any connection between those movies... only what is common is the few names of personages... i love both of them and theres no sense to compare them

reply

thats a hard one. tom cruise is a better acter but can you see him singing like stuart did at the concert? personally, i would pick stuart because he is the perfect modern day, sexy lestat, even though tom cruise is a better actor.

reply

I've now seen both movies and I think Stewart LOOKS the part whereas Tom ACTS the part. I preferred the second film and actually preferred Stewart's acting the majority of the time - but I think if you kept Stewart's looks and added Tom's acting ability - you would find the ideal Lestat. Just my opinion :).

reply

The Cruiser all the way. Townsend looked very cool at times... but I thought his acting was fairly average.

Cruise gave him charisma and mistique. I loved his performance.

reply

I like Stuart Townshend better just on the basis that he didn't look SUPER CREEPY as a blonde...But Tom was a really good Lestat.

reply

I am a really big fan of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, and I was rather disappointed with Queen of the Damned. I like Interview with the Vampire better, but as Lestat, I think Stuart wins. Tom was good, and he looked like Lestat, but the way he talked blew it for me. Stuart was very sexy and sensual like Lestat is. I'm not saying Tom wasn't but Stuart just really nailed that part. Stuart was very feline in movement like Lestat, and he also had that attitude that Lestat posses. Tom had it too, but Stuart really possessed it. Stuart was just great as Lestat. He also had that cruel and evil attitude. Tom had it too, but when Tom got angry, I just kinda got flashbacks of Tom in A Few Good Men, and that kinda wore the effect off. Stuart all the way!

reply

I agree... Tom is a great actor but I though Stuart hit the part spot on. Wait a go Stu!

reply

I adore Stuart Townsend and I think he's gorgeous as Lestat. He just has that kind of swagger and confidence that you'd expect a rock star to have... Also, he has the French accent, which Tom never had. Bearing in mind I haven't read the books, I would say Stuart's miles better than Tom.

reply

Even if "Interview" is a better movie, Stuart Townsend is a better Lestat.

Nah, Cruise had Lestat down perfectly, though Townsend could have looked more like him if they dyed his air blonde for the movie. Lestat was in his early 20's when he was made in the books, and Stuart had the younger look.

reply

ok from my perspective cruise and townsend fit perfectly as lestat, in those movies, switch them and then you can complain about not looking the part , or bad acting or whatever. anne rice apologized for what she said about cruise and townsend looked horid when they dyed his hair blonde

"I just got the impression sometimes that when someone liked QOTD movie is either just plain dumb or didn't even care to check out the books first" ( blasphemous_brat_prince) personaly I don't think of myself as eigther of these options, I have read the books before the films and loved both....

and WHAT, is wrong with you people!?! it seems that EVERYONE(almost) who's read the book just Hate/dislike QotD-film?!? perhaps it's just me who's on the wrong side, but I LOVE it, I know it's all to little true to the book(s), however, if one just forget that, it's a GREAT film, and the musik is brilliant, and the casting OK, exept Khayman, Mael and Jesse....

As for the question; I would have to say a little of both, but greatest part of Stuart. Stuart have the voice, accent, high, hair type(not the corler),walking kind, fingers,THE look in the eyes, and the mischef over him to fit in Lestat's personality. However Cruise have the aristokrat(sp?)-like caracter, the hair corlor, and the skin corlor. But general both movie's have been bad with the skin-thing.

All in all I'm most in for Stuart Townsend...
and I also happen to like Matthew Newton better than Antonio Banderas in the Armand role.... pety, Antonio is a HOTTY ^_^

And if I dosn't remember to wrong, then somebody said that Cruise didn't get a chance in the role? but anyway he DID. Cruise passed due to prior commitments and the understandable impulse of an actor not to repeat himself.

You know, even though I was a HUGE fan of the books for years even before Interview came out as a movie, and even though I read each book several times, I could NEVER picture Lestat as a blonde. To me, he always had black hair. For that reason, and also the fact that he acted passionatley for the role, Townsend will always be the "real" Lestat for me. Plus, hi accent was FAR better.

reply

I really Think Stuart was good looking (and great sounding, ahh gotta love the sexy french accent) but Tom was definately better looking. Ok maybe not the big nose, but he had the sadistic personality right.
I only started reading the books mid-last year, then saw the movies. I really think they SERIOUSLY screwed up Queen Of the Damned. *waves arms around frustratedly* I MEAN MARIUS DID NOT MAKE LESTAT!!! THAT WAS AN OBIVIOUS FACT!!!! SO WAS LESTAT'S HAVING BLOND HAIR AND BLUE-VIOLET EYES AND AN ANARCHIST'S SENSE OF HUMOUR!!!!!
And not only did Mekhare not come into the story, Maharet wasn't in there much either, or the Twin Dreams. I seriously think whoever wrote the screenplay should be dragged out into the street and killed.

reply

I think most definetly that tom cruise was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better then stuart townsend, personally I think that stuart's acting in the movie was VERY cheesy... tom cruise was more mysterious which brought more to his role as lestat.

reply

I liked both films but IWTV Tom fits the description of Lestat: the blonde hair, his attitude, the laugh, pretty much dead on. However in QOTD Lestat is more edgier which i liked. How Townsend moved, and talked was also Lestat. Even though QOTD didnt correlate to the first movie, I like it because its different. But I deff. agree that Cruise and Townsend would make the perfect Lestat.

Stuart Townsend was NOT Lestat!! He may have been an o.k. Vampire to some people, but Tom Cruise IS Lestat! No contest as far as i'm concerned. He had the perfect accent, read the book, had the perfect body language and facial exspessions that are how Lestat is in the book, and he is just an all around better actor than Townsend. (Plus the IWTV was better written since it was written by Anne Rice) In QotD, they let Lestat feed on his groupies, which is WAY wrong!!! But back to the point..Tom Cruise=Lestat... Stuart Townsend= Modern dracula that has developed a fondness for rock music.
