Why would this man, who is obsessed by 9 or 10 year old girls in red dresses getting murdered, allow his newfound daught/granddaughter/whatever to frolick around on a swing in a red dress all day? It' just so stupid. Anything but a red dress, I'd say. But a red dress is all we see her wear, and it sure ratches up the tension. Is this movie really that simple-minded?

It is possible in my opinion that he was using her as bait he even helped pick out her red dress when they bought it. I'm positive he meant her no harm but he was willing to do anything to lure the murderer out that is why the red dress is so significant I think.
