Hmm...perhaps a bit racist?

Okay, I'm not saying that the subject matter in the movie was racist, just morely the title. Listen, these men are in no way the original kings of comedy. Bernie Mac and D.L. Hugely have not been around long enough to earn this title in any way. I just think it seems racist because of the performers who are supposedly "The Kings of Comedy." Whoever decided to film this was just obviously a fan of black stand-up and slapped the movie with that title. Let's start making a 4-person list of who the REAL kings of comedy were (are). I'm taking suggestions, but I already have 2 down:

1. George Carlin (truely a king of comedy, he's been around since the sixties, maybe even the fifties! How could he NOT be a king of comedy?)
2. Richard Pryor (Okay, I'll let this movie slip by this one, because he's dead, but still...George Carlin excluded from the Kings of comedy? He was still alive!)
3.
4.

Anyway, I'm open to more suggestions.

Sounds like blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
Im like uh huh, okay, wassup, shut up!

I don't really like George Carlin, I saw a couple of his shows on HBO, and except the begining of the one where the cemetary is in the background, they weren't that funny to me. I don't really care for Dave Chappelle's stand up either. As far as the comedians in The Original Kings od Comedy, personally I had never seen any of them do stand up except D.L. Hughley (which was very funny to me, btw). But I loved the movie and thought they were all funny. True, I like Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence better but I enjoyed this movie with the comedians it had immensely. Anyway the point is, different people have different views on what they think is comedy and who they think is funny. Doesn't make you a racist if you agree or not.

And if you dont understand it then let me give it to you in spanish...

i would agree with this list, minus murphy and seinfeld, replace them with rodney dangerfield and diceman! a true mix of great stand up guys!!!

Use of the term "original Kings of Comedy"(as applied to stand up) while excluding the name Lenny Bruce is truly an act of comedy.
I mean come on.

Why Oh Why do we have to make everything racial.

This is a showcase of Black stand up comedians, directed by a black director. As a black man (Who loves Comedy) I find "black" comedy to be more enjoyable than "White" Comedy simply because I can relate to what these guys are talking about. Robin Williams and George Carlin are funny however, they dont make me laugh @ myself and my people the way Bernie and Ced can. The comics in this film have lived my life in a since. Yes I will *beep* a kid up like Bernie, Yes, Ive heard sister Johnson Cuss in church like Steve, And my friends can use the word *beep* 100 times in 1 conversation. I didnt grow up like Jerry Sindfeld and George Carlin and they dont know what its like to be me on a day to day basis. Im not trying to take anything from the aformentioned comics but in my world the 4 that were picked by spike are kings of comedy Especially Bernie Mac (WHO-YA-WIT?)

I think I'm the only person in the world who doesn't find George Carlin funny.

i wouldnt say its racist, but considering that Comedy Central released "The Latin Kings of Comedy" it does seem like we're kinda leaving white people out
lets be honest if there was a "The White Kings of Comedy" they would be criticized for leavingf other races out

Hey, face it, a movie called "The Four Not-Original Kings of Comedy" would've been a world-record flunk. If you don't think these four guys are the world's best comedians (I don't either), just don't sweat it.

You might as well say that Harry Potter is racist because Voldemort is white. Sheesh.

reply

Not racist, just arrogant, which is fitting of anything involving Bernie Mac.

Martin Lawrence is NOT funny. He just has friend named Eddie Murphy.

Spike Lee is racist. What did you expect?

reply

[deleted]

I don't know who came up with the title, but Spike Lee is the director. Not saying Spike is racist, but he is overly pro-black.

Personally, I never cared for the title either, but no one complained when Jerry Lewis starred in a Movie called "The King of Comedy"

But yeah - I agree - They were a lot of comedians that were funnier than Cedric, Steve, Bernie and D.L.
