The lesbian overtones in this cartoon are FIERCE

Not that I have a problem with lesbians or gays but did anyone else notice that the lesbian overtones are a bit much, particularly with courtney, ginger and miranda. Its not just popularity, at times Miranda and Ginger fight over Courtney as if they both want to be Courtneys girlfriend. Also her friend with the glasses is probably in the closet.

nope so after watching this show when it first aired i am rewatching now and

Gingers has had like 5 crushes all on guys Miranda liked Ethan and then dated Daren. Courtney likes Will Daren's older brother, and Macy has stated before weird things to lead you into thinking she likes older men(maybe as a creepy father way but she likes hairy ears and stuff) and even seemed to be into hoodizy when he asked her to the dance

If I had to guess one gay person in the show it would be between Brandon or Blake you can't say its Brandon's upbringing that makes him at that way we see his bother in the hairy legs ep and he is normal or atleast as normal as u can be selling homework in a bathroom

reply

Ooh.... don't say "normal" like that, it makes it seems as though being gay is somehow unnatural.

As a queer teenager who grew up watching this as an elementary school girl--before I even really knew I was queer, by the way--I don't think it's about secret lesbians. And I consider myself someone pretty quick to pick up on gay undertones in different media.
I definitely think it's possible that some characters were gay, but I don't think it's something the show acknowledged in the first place. I do have to say that Courtney struck me as a little...off, in terms of her slight obsession over Ginger. That could definitely be construed in a gay way. And Blake? I think he was just a prissy rich boy, but who can say what he was into for sure?

To me this show was all about being a girl going through one of the most stressful times of her life. Going through junior high sort of sucks for everyone, and this was about living through it. Ginger, Dodie, and Macie were best friends! Girl friendships can oftentimes be the most intimate of friendships and it helps x1000 to have one during that point in your life. I think it's something really beautiful.

Tomorrow you're homeless, tonight it's a blast!

Yes I have to say, I'm someone who loves finding overtones and subtext in things, but here I really didn't see it. As others have said though, Courtney would be the only one that was a little iffy but I doubt any overtones were intentional. Ginger was definitely straight! She only showed interest in male characters so I think anything others might see as lesbian is overthinking the show. Also, Miranda was just a possessive character. Haven't watched the show in a while but I seem to recall her also being extremely possessive of Darren when they were dating. She felt threatened by Ginger and since Courtney is extremely popular and her best friend, of course she isn't going to like Ginger if she views her as a threat to her popularity and friendship. Plus I just don't think she cared for her. Macie I guess is questionable, but not really if you really look at her. She was a young, innocent girl. She wasn't really thinking about anyone sexually. Also I think she had low self-esteem so didn't think any guys ever liked her. She was noticeably happy when Hoodsey asked her to the dance and was her secret admirer.

For the guys, yeah Blake and Brandon are the only ones who would remotely be questionable. As has been said though Blake just seemed like a stuck up rich kid. Brandon is questionable, and even if in the future it'd be clear he was gay, I doubt he was written to be having feelings for any of the other male characters on the show. So yeah I think it's reaching to think there are gay undertones in this show, especially between Miranda, Courtney and Ginger. The only one of those three I could see being questionable is Courtney; how anyone could think Ginger, arguably one of the more boy crazy girls on the show, is a lesbian is beyond me.

reply

I actually agree about Macy being a lesbian.
And, Miranda I definitely think had a thing for Courtney.

Am I the only who doesn't like the idea of Macie being a lesbian? It seems like a bunch of people are suggesting this because she would seem the most stereotypically like a lesbian. I'm a lesbian by the way, but Macie is not someone I would automatically think was gay. She was very into Hoodsey and I think is actually supposed to have ended up with him in the end. I watched The Wedding Frame before and recall her being with him in the last scene in the future.

Also, again, Macie was extremely sheltered. Not sure sheltered is the right word, but remember how much she wanted to be a little kid? She was innocent! She had that birthday party that was basically for a child. And while yes she was not boy crazy like the others, not every girl is like that. I think she knows she is weird, child-like, etc. I think the idea of dating would make her think of growing up, something I'm not sure Macie wanted to do. I guess I can see why people think of Macie as the lesbian, but I think people are misinterpreting her character.

i doubt miaranda is lesbian, she is just extremely possessive of whoever she latches onto

I think all of you are just taking things the wrong way. Whoever started this thread is just trying to find something that was never there in the first place. Miranda is just possessive and afraid of losing people close to her and if anything SHE wanted to be the most popular in school, Courtney is just a stuck up vain rich girl who likes to get attention no matter what, Ginger is straight no question about that, Dodie is just clingy and toxic and rude and bossy, Macie in the most innocent of all of them she holds on to her naïve-ness and yes she was TOO sheltered and was not given a lot of attention growing up and that can really mess with a persons upbringing as they get older :(

...Blake is just the stereotypical upper crust rich spoiled brat...and as for Brandon, he could have a lisp, and it could be the way he is raised why he talks and dresses like that (note he lives with his grandma and not his real parents...ever wonder why?)

I'm not sure when the trivia section for this show was updated but this is what I found. "Emily Kapnek claimed they toyed with the idea of Courtney Grippling confessing to being in love with Ginger, but it was vetoed by executives."

So maybe the original person that started this thread was on to something. When I used to watch this show I didn't see any "gay tones" but maybe the show had some moments since one of the creators wanted it to be true.

I respectfully disagree.
