Was Elvis really his pops?

So was Elvis really Costner's old man?

reply

We are left to assume that he was probably both of their fathers.

reply

its left to the viewer to decide, but i like to think that at least in the story, yea both of them were elvis kids, making them half brothers

one good, one evil but both left to fend for themselves in a bad situation that leads them to this showdown

---

while obviously the movie is fiction, it is actually loosely based on one nugget of truth: there were a lot of people claiming to be elvis children and a couple of their paternity tests were non-conclusive, meaning they couldnt be proven one way or the other

When DNA tests for paternity are performed it is actually a series of tests that expand out through a succession of probes into the DNA the number of markers exposed. A positive test for paternity will lead to the lab expanding the number of markers exposed and again attempting to match. In most cases they will do this three times: the initial test, plus two marker expansions. This helps to eliminate any accidental commonality between markers that may be used for the first test plus helps to independently confirm each DNA test.

If during these tests they get markers that match except for one or two oddities this would label the test as inconclusive. In this situation the lab may recommend a more robust DNA test that expands down markers on the DNA even further or they may suggest that new samples be collected and re-submitted.

From what I have read, no further tests were allowed to be performed to clarify the inconslusive results

I assumed he was father to both as well. my question is, did they each know that about the other?

Well, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle.

reply

I think that Kevin Costner's character truly believed that he was. Just another indication of his unbalanced character.

reply

Hmm, I've seen this several times, love it!!
I do remember a line leading us to believe that Costner's character may be kin to the king, but I don't remember Russel's character having this thought as well?

reply

I seriously doubt this, if I remember correctly they said his character was born in 1855, which means that Elvis Presley would have been only 20 years old. And if I am also remembering correctly I think Vernon became a father in the same year he was going to turn 19 years old. And I don't think you ever see too many 19 or 20 year olds that want to become a father at a young age. And next of all Kevin Costner's character was only ficiton so there is no way he could have been his father.

reply

I think you mean 1955, not 1855. 2nd yes Vernon had Elvis when he was 19. Presley was already going around doing concerts and was popular in Texas in 1954 and had women in his stops. So in this fictionalized world, he could very well be Elvis' illegitimate kid.

reply

I believe that the Costner character BELIEVED he was Elvis' son - however Kurt Russell's character was wearing the necklace with Elvis' logo that he handed out to friends and family and when he got to his boat there was some sort of proof that HE was Elvis's son - not Costner.

reply

I say your free to believe anything you want, but still there is the question if either one of Elvis Presley's son then why do they both have different last names then Elvis' last name?

reply

The question is if they were his illegitimate sons, meaning Elvis knocked up their moms and split. So they wouldn't have his last name, most likely they would have their mothers name, or if the mother was married at the time and didn't tell her husband the kid wasn't theirs or if the mother later married and the husband legally adopted them. More likely than not, they wouldn't have his last name. Even tho both are hinted at, we get more evidence that atleast Kurt Russell is by the necklace and where's and the boat he is on. The name of the boat and as he's saying "my father gave it to me" he's picking up a framed gold record. It's also a subtle plot devise as to why there is so much tension between Costner and Russell

reply

Illegitimate kids usually take their mother's surname.
