Best RPG game ever?

I just started collecting old games on budget. Including several RPGs. Just curious as to whether Baldurs is truly the best there is.

Everyone always seems to sight System Shock/Deus Ex as the best. But I think their both too linear and have the strange habit of never, ever, bloody ever having enough of the equipment needed to take the route you want.

The other RPGs i've played are Planescape, the Bioware back catalogue, Final Fantasy and the Golden Sun seriese.

In my opinion Planescape had one of the best narrative ever. But it was awful as a game.

Opinions please

I think BG2 is the best single player rpg ever, the only other possible contender is KOTOR. Dragon Age doesn't come close!

Not that I couldnt imagine an even better game.

But all successors lacked what BG2 already had:

- most original quests
- most entertaining npcs
- some of the best voices, esp Irenicus is maybe the best villain ever
- best romances - its hard to believe, but nobody has done them in a RPG as well since
- most amazing depth in any magic system ever
- second most tactical combat. TToEE is even better, but has a very uninteresting storyline

Totally agree, best RPG of all time has got to be Baldur's Gate 1 & 2. Sure modern games have better graphics, but they don't have the immersive depth that these games have.

I doubt people will be re-installing Mass Effect in 10-20 years from now because they wanted to try a different class. Alright maybe a handful of really curious players might, but not as many players that will still be re-installing BG 1 or 2. I re-installed BG 2 and its expansion early this year and found a couple of side quests I never knew about and some curious things like holes in the ground of a couple maps.

No game I have played has influenced me in that way like Baldur's Gate has..

It is definitely one of the best RPGs ever. None of the games I have now have anywhere near the level of complexity and detail in creating such a great storyline to complement the game. The spell casting in Baldur's Gate was phenomenal. It is one of the few games that I feel doesn't seem outdated even if the graphics would be considered primitive by today's standards. I can play it again and again without feeling bored because there are just so many choices I can make especially with the accompaniment of party members.

To me, anyway.

BG is not the best Infinity Engine game, though it is a fine one. The best IE engine game, in my opnion, is Planescape Torment. I first played it more than 10 years ago, and I still go back to play it sometimes, as it's like re-reading a great novel. The BG series, though fun, does not have this sort of deep resonance with me, but to each his own. I would say that it's the game that feels the most like a classic pen & paper D&D experience, right alongside Icewind Dale 1 & 2, though if you disliked the interface from Planescape you might not find this enjoyable either.

The best non-Infinity Engine RPGs are Fallout 1 & 2, which are truly outstanding (both in terms of narrative and gameplay) and much better, IMHO, than Fallout 3 or New Vegas (though I like these games too). I would recommend the original Fallouts to anyone.
