Tubular: A Tribute to the Most Evil of Evil Levels

I don't know about you guys, but I've ended up throwing all kinds of objects at my TV screen because of this level. In the 14 years I've owned this game, I've beaten Tubular maybe twice. Anyone else share my sentiments towards this horrible, horrible place?

reply

Funny, I just recently played SMW again (a friend of mine got the Game Boy version, and is terrible at it, so I, oh so selflessly opted to play as well), and I said more or less what you just said about this level (just with quite a bit more profanity). I too have probably only beat it twice, and I'd like to think I am a seasoned veteran of this game!

My Pointless New Years resolution shall be to beat Tubular! Mawhaha.

My head's not big! Why does everyone say that?

You know I've heard TONS of similar tales about Tubular. I own the game, but never bothered trying to get to the Secret World from the Star World, let alone playing Tubular. My housemates had identical complaints as well. What is it about the level that's so hard? Is it just really long? Is it chock full of the all the hardest bad guys in the game? I also understand that there's a part that you can only get past by continually collecting those balloon things that make you float. Is it that part alone that makes the level so hard? What is it? I've just always been curious.

reply

Like you mentioned, what makes this level so hard, is there is a series of two or three Balloons you have to get, but unless you move PERFECTLY, you will defalt before you reach the next one. To seem arrogent, I've always been really good at games like this, where it takes honest to goodness skill over luck and enough ammo, but Tubular is just hard! And not only do you have to float in the certain way that lets you travel farther, you have to avoid the stupid BaseBall Dudes, the Fire Spitting Plants, the Foot Ball Dudes, several flying Koopas, and a few other 'air-hazard' style bad guys. As far as I can tell, there is like one 'path' (though invisiable) through the area, that you have to follow perfectly, since if you don't go at the right speed, you won't reach the Balloon, and you'll get hit by the projectials.

NO!...oh wait, yeah.

Okay. I thought that it might be that part that made it so hard. That DOES sound like a nightmare on game street. If I ever decide to try and get all the goals in the game, I'll definitely remember to beware of Tubular. I know I've always been curious about how the game looks different once you beat the Secret World. And to think I always thought Butter Bridge, Cheese Bridge or whatever that bridge before Ludwig's castle is called was the hardest level. At least that one can be made easier with a blue Yoshi.

reply

Worse than Tubular is the secret for the fortress inside Bowser's cave. Not only do you have to find it, but then you have to maneuver the stupid block snake all the way up there. But I agree, it takes me at least a dozen tries on a good day to beat Tubular.

reply

What? You´re serious?

I beat this game without breaking a sweat. getting all 96 points as well.

never had any problems at all.

Sure tubular is harder than some other levels, but thats nothing compared to some other games.

- You kill anybody?
- A few cops.
- No real people?
- Just cops.

I have to agree with I am Samson, Turbular isn't that hard. All you have to do is get blue yoshi then once in the level click the button to make the coins turn in to blocks, then eat a koopa, fly, land on the blocks with koppa's just in reach, and eat it just before the time runs out. That's it. Done. Finished. I figured this out when I was like 8 and I'm 16 now.

reply

I never tried it with a Yoshi, but without one it is sadistically difficult. I was playing through the game with my brother and when we got to that level he just stopped playing untill I beat it.

I kinda like it that Nintendo included such hard levels in this game, it gives it a ton more replay value.

reply

give blue Yoshi a try and you'll see that it isn't actually that hard. But your right it does give the game a high replay value

Tubular is the most foul evil demonic terrible level ever known to mankind. I'm pretty sure I've only beat it a couple of times as well.

Back when I think I was around 10ish or so we used to live on SMW and it took us months to beat that damn level for the first time. Man we through such a celebration, our parents rushed into the room to find out what we were all yelling about.

One of the best moments of my childhood. *tear*

My god I hate that level. *beep* awesome game though.

Out here in the perimeter there are no stars
Out here we are stone, immaculate.

reply

Yeah. It's Evil. It's surely the badest level, but beating it is the biggest kick in the game too. When im down and wanna be happy i play Mario, and when i beat this level, i get happy again:). Yey

There is nothing "Tubular" about the level Tubular.

Tubular AND Valley Fortress are probably the two hardest levels in the whole game. The only other Mario game I know of that has levels like that is SMB: The Lost Levels.

I know how you feel. I nearly shredded my Gameboy Advance in half while struggling to complete that level. Nintendo pushed the hardness a little too far with that place, it almost felt like I was playing The Lost Levels or something.

Man, Tubular ranks with The Lost Levels as some of th ehadest things Nintendo has done...

Howver, it is nothing, I mean NOTHING compared to what Capcom did in the very first Mega Man (for NES). Boy that game has the most evil levels ever.

i completed tubular once and have never even attempted to play it again. And the lost levels that was on super mario allstars was so so difficult too!

reply

I'm sure Outrageous was harder. I'm no gaming god, but tubular didn't take me long.

reply

Tubular is not that hard (in fact its easy) after u finish it once.

tibular was one of the toughest levels for me and it was much easier with the blue yoshi, but just kinda hard trying to use the balloons, but it was the 2nd toughest level out of the star special ones, like the hardest for me was outrageous (i think that's the one it was) with avoiding bullets and to get over a big tunnel i either had to jump off yoshi or try to jump on a bullet

Haha, Tubular isn't that hard... Sure, I might fail sometimes, but usually I finish it in one time. And that is WITHOUT blue Yoshi of course... Hehe, but maybe I've just played it to often... Even Outrageous is no challenge anymore I guess... Sometimes I take an evening together with a friend of mine. We then drink some beers and finish all 96 levels in nice ways...

Truer words were never spoken. I have the first 3 Mega Man games for NES and I've never beaten any of them. In 1 and/or 2 I've gotten as far as the second or third Dr. Wily stage, but in 3 I haven't even gotten that far.

Is Outrageous the one with the little forest fires jumping around? That one is a real pain in the ass. Tubular is even worse. You have to time everything perfectly and float along just the right path, avoiding the baseballs and footballs and koopas and other stuff. Argh, what a tough level.

We have to get back to bootblacking! We like it VERY MUCH!
