the story is taking place in nova scotia. i believe Claire and her mom live in Berlin. the city scenes were filmed there and i think i heard her mother mention going back to Berlin near the beginning of the movie.

i've been to nova scotia (as well as other maritime provinces) and the accent is difficult to describe and i can only image even more difficult to imitate. i say give them all some slack on that...

her accent is very northern cape breton which is an island in nova scotia.. i am from cape breton but the southern part. northern cape bretoners sound VERY gaelic, and are sometimes hard to understand.*hows she going bi* lol.. famous cape breton quote. 75% of the movie takes place in nova scotia and is shot in nova scotia. very beautiful place if you like lots of ocean views and trees.

I kept wondering the whole movie where this place was. At first I thought it had to be around Nova Scotia because of the scenery, and because Claire's mother had a very clear American accent. I figured She had moved them up there from maybe somewhere in the New England area. But then Claire started talking and it was obvious that she's German. Earlier in the movie there is a scene where her mom said over the phone something like "well what did you expect me to do, leave her sitting around in Berlin?" So apparently Claire and her mom had been living in Germany, and the mix of growing up in NS then Germany somehow made the mom sound American.
As Silly's story progressed I kept thinking it was somewhere in the UK or Ireland because of the varying accents and the way actors looked- fair skin, red hair, and the like. But finally the talk of the vikings coming over from Europe made it clear that it really was Nova Scotia. Then when Claire and James were in the boat they were studying a map of NS.
So yeah, the people who made this did a pretty bad job of managing the actors. For a movie so immersed in a local history you'd think they would have trained them all to be at least somewhat consistent in their accents. I've been up to NS a few times and the accents didn't seem THAT hard to nail down. The scenery was beautiful though and it was obviously a good call to film it partially on location.
