where?

where did this story take place? at first i thought it was somewhere in europe. but kirstens accent started to change all throughout the movie. so can anybody tell me where this thing took place?

reply

I think it is supposed to take place somewhere in the british isles' - the accents sound vaguely scottish, and there is a history of vikings in the area.

CANADA!!!

The movie took place in Nova Scotia, I believe.. the reason why I came here was to comment on Kirstens accent throughout the movie. I'm glad you felt the same way. At first she sounded British, then Southern, then Scottish... It was frustrating.

If I could have any job in the world I'd be a professional Cinderella.

the funny thing is, people in novia scotia actually sound like that. a bizarre mix of irish and southern. i thought the movie was good. although i couldnt figure where they were in the ending when they were on the motorcyle in some city.

Lynn Redgrave's accent sounds Irish - but the voice on the radio is clearly not British. She refers to the Vikings as the first European visitors - indicating this is nor Europe.

It was largely filmed in Nova Scotia:

They keep repeating the fact that they live on an island. If it's indeed Nova Scotia, it's probably supposed to be Cape Breton. With the accents, however, they could be doing a (fairly lousy) portrayal of Newfoundland.

That 'ending' was actually what happened earlier, where Clair lost her boyfriend in the motorcycle accident. The premise of the movie is that Clair is taken back to the island of her ancestors, so it's not surprising that she previously lived in a bigger city.

I didn't see the start of the movie so I don't know if it was named, where she was from. It could be Halifax, that's the closest city, but if she lived that close it's more likely they would have already visited, etc. Otherwise it could be anywhere, any city in the world.

I saw this some time ago so I may be completely wrong, but I recall thinking the "city" in the film was Berlin (or perhaps another German city?). I do remember the boyfriend was played by German actor Daniel Bruhl which probably influenced my reasoning. . .

takes place in nova scotia i think, but it makes ns out to be all uninhabited, which it isnt. and the ppl arent all poor and irish

When Kirsten Dunst's character looks in the fishing log books and find the records of the peopled 'drowned' every 50 years, the front of the book says "Ironbound Island".

I was just channel-surfing and happened upon that scene, which is what caught my eye to see what was going on.

Ironbound Island is a very tiny island off the south coast of Nova Scotia. Way off the coast. From the famous Peggy's Cove, you can almost see it on the horizon through binoculars, but it's hidden behind Tancook Island.

In the early 90s I dated a fellow who grew up on Ironbound. At that time, it had a population of 16. He went to a one-room schoolhouse with one other student and his mother was the teacher, until high school when he went to the mainland.

It had in the past been a thriving fishing community with fascinating family histories and dynamics. But the decline of the fishery as a lifestyle eventually led most of the residents to the mainland.

Most folks on Cape Breton Island wouldn't think of themselves as being on 'an island' in exactly the same way... it's a large island with many communities. Ironbound is an island in 'that' way - small, one community, isolated. You can walk from one end to the other in about an hour.

I see it was actually (at least partly) filmed on Ironbound Island too. I only visited the island once myself but I thought that lighthouse looked darn familiar! That is exactly the feeling of life on that Island -- though life many years ago, when there were a few more people.

Also, not everyone in Nova Scotia talks like that. There are many different accents. :) The South Shore accent is very distinct though -- it's actually closer to German, since the ancestry there is from German immigrants (reflected in last names and town names like Lunenberg), whereas most of the maritimes has the Irish influence. Interesting that Clair was portrayed by a German actress. None of the actors *really* had a south shore accent down though... it's not an easy one at all! A few sounded Cape Breton fairly well, I didn't really hear any South Shores though.

That's very interesting, thanks for that insight.
Redgrave would have researched the accent in depth, but guess even she couldn't find the distinction between the one she adopted and a south shores accent!
The daft thing is that she's the older 'Dunst', so why that actress didn't bother to at least try to mimic the accent of her older self is beyond me - unless it's true that she simply couldn't be bothered!
Beautiful photography though. Perhaps there'll be a remake that'll make more sense.

reply

I believe it takes place in Newfoundland.

reply

I think the attempts at a South Shore accent were ridiculous. I live there and have the accent, and it is nothing like that!
