So boring!
Oh god this movie was so boring. I don't know what it was about and don't even care.

This film dripped raw emotion from every deliberate and beautiful motion of its character's hands. The film opened a window into the heart of a thoughtful individual in a way that is rarely captured.
Those of you who missed this are frankly, color-blind. There was something fleeting and true that came through on the screen. And you missed it. And you'll always miss it... it is something very base and subtle that most people will never know exists.
And for that I am very sorry.

Personally I thought the film was sexy, beautiful and sad. It reminded me a lot of a Haruki Murakami novel. And some other Japanese literature. The lead character was as cool as cool can be. Unfortunately I can not get my hands on a DVD copy of In The Mood For Love and it is driving me nuts man! I can only find it on VHS and like, well, as if I still have a video player. VHS has done nothing for me for years. Mega frustration though.

Well obviously this director has made a name for himself with his previous films. I will have to check those out, because otherwise, 2046 is not a great movie.
I'll admit, certain scenes were engaging and the premise is cool. I felt like it needed more to pull you in to the story, however and even a fan of this movie must admit - it is PAINFULLY slow. This coming from a guy who usually rushes to see movies that people say are "slow."
I'm a bit in the middle here - though I spent the last 40 minutes of the film mainly messing with my laptop, and only glancing at the screen. I will go back and watch the end to see if it pulls me in, but otherwise I was apatient as could be with this film and it was... 'blah, OK.'
BTW folks, the pseudo-intellectual cries of 'you just don't get it then' are so trite. Please refrain from knee-jerking them around the board. Thanks!

Don't bother trying to watch it again, I watched it all the way through, because I so badly wanted to like it, but it is awful.
I would not say it is one of the worst movies of all time, but it is vastly overrated. Here are some of the reasons why it is bad.
It is overly setimental: oh, another kissing scene! Oh, another classical piece to accompany. Is it the same tune? Is it the same girl?
Claustrophobic: how much of it did not evoke a sense of pointlessnes, darkness and damp -- nearly all in the same drab pallette.
Incoherent: back and forth in time between women. What is going on?! Who cares, anymore.
Were it not for Li Gong this may well, after all, have been one of the worst movies of all time. She was the only one who displayed any emotion beyond the hopelessness so prevalent everywhere else in this dull dirge.

Agreed. I just finished watching this tonight and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who felt this film failed to live up to the promise. As it progressed I found myself asking how much longer there was left till the end. The premise of the storyline was great but poorly executed. With a few rewrites, this could've been a classic. What I saw was the director's cut, so I wonder how the bad the original version was?
2046 is very disappointing and frustrating so because it had the potential to be so much better. It's the cinematic equivalent of a dream date who looks and sounds superb but has little to offer beneath the surface in terms of substance or depth. It doesn't matter if it's the art-house genre or not, a bad film is a bad film. share

I've bought from them before and they are authentic dvds and ship relatively fast. Most of their movies are region free, but if they aren't, most dvd player can be made region free.
And how is 2 hours long?
Yeah man, like the Murakami novel Dance, Dance, Dance. The Dolphin hotel being the 2046 room of this film. But nothing seems critically important in this movie (he settles for 2047). I didn't think I liked D,D,D after I closed the book, but I find myself thinking about it a lot over the subsequent months. I wished it had kept with the horror/suspense feeling of the initial encouter with the Sheepman.
Anyway, I haven't finished the film yet but it doesn't seem as authentic as In The Mood For Love so far... unrequited love in 1960's Hong Kong. Still not a "bad" movie by any stretch though.

shareWow, that's pretty smug, stuff your pity and here's hoping that while bent down admiring something very base and subtle by the roadside you'll be too captivated to notice the very large MAC truck of 'plot' bearing down upon you!
The only subtle hand gesture I noticed in the film appeared to be Wong's extended middle finger towards the audience as he tested my patience with this self-indulgent clap-trap.
I liked Chunking Express but this...... ugh....
I realize that there are alot of Cineo's out there that,once they fall for a director, can never accept that director may can make a huge miss-step once in a while (due usually to an over inflated ego resulting from being constantly told what a genius they are), I myself required alot of therapy before I could admit to myself that Steven Spielberg has not made a good movie since '89 (Private Ryan was almost there, his 'remake' Band of Brothers certiantly was, but as a mini-series it doesn't count)
2046 had some nice nuanced performances and patchy bits of intrest but these just don't make up for the fact that a good story is usually more than the sum of it's parts. Boo-hoo he just can't find love no matter how badly he treats women or how attracted he is to detatched unemotional androids (both literal and figurative). Go rent Swingers, The Girl on the Bridge, Amores Perros or Roger Dodger instead.
Wow, that perfectly encapsulated the artistic dilemma of the movie.
