What's So Funny 'Bout Dallai Lamma?

i dont get whats funny about d. lamma, when Cane tells Bullock to smile and she doesnt want to, he tells her to think about Lamma.... why?

i just disnt get that part.

reply

Try saying it three times fast, maybe then you'll get it.

reply

i just said it three times fast and i still dont get it...should i feel dumb?

reply

no hun cos I just said it three times too and makes no sense to me either.

ah well im not American though

reply

Well...isn't the Dalai Lama supposed to be this totally calm, zen-like, tolerant being? Vic was basically telling Gracie not to be so high-strung.

reply

i think she isnt supposed to be smiling, i think she is supposed to look calm and zen (Dali Lama)but she laughed anyway.

reply

She's not laughing at the Dalai Lama, but rather at the situation.

"Come in," she said,"I'll give you shelter from the storm."

reply

ooohhhh. thanx anyway.

reply

Exactly.

Probably he suggested Dalai Lama, considering that is not something that you associate with humor.

reply

Yeah because the Dalai Lama is serious and not funny in any way (as far as I am aware)so he probably suggested that to take her mind of the situation.

reply

Exactly. She was supposed to think about the Dalai Lama to keep her mind off having to appear in front of everyone in a swimsuit. That is what she was uncomfortable about. It seemed to work because once she started repeating the name she relaxed and seemed to have a good time.

reply

Ummm...not exactly. Yes, Vic told Gracie to think about the Dalia Lama because the Dalai Lama is supposed to represent serenity and peace, and he wanted her to forget about her embarrassment at having to be seen on national television in a swimsuit. Her wanted her to go out there with an attitude of calmness and serenity. However, I totally disagree with your assessment that she was relaxed out there. The reason she was laughing was because she was not relaxed and was embarrassed. Vic's hope that her thinking about the Dalai Lama would put her at ease did not pan out. Se was uncomfortable on stage in a swimsuit and she was laughing because of her embarrassment. Lots of people laugh when they are embarrassed. I happen to be one of them.

And just to let everyone know. The Dalai Lama was the spiritual and political leader of Tibet. He is supposed to be some type of holy reincarntion. When one Dalia Lama dies, his spirit is reborn in another person. Anyway, the current Dalia Lama is in exile. The Dalai Lama was forced into exile when China invaded Tibet in 1959.

reply

No, the Dalai Lama has a great sense of humour - every clip I've ever seen of him he's smiling or laughing.

reply

>because the Dalai Lama is serious and not funny in any way

I guess he's not funny to most people, but if you read any Tibetan or buddhist philosophy, there's a lot of humour, and the DL can be a goofball - when he's not getting bashed for doing something truly weird. I've hear him make jokes - comes naturally in buddhism.

I didn't understand it either, but maybe it was supposed to help her not laugh. Just a giant wtf to me - oh, and Tibetan buddhism isn't Zen, so... that's a stretch.
