What was the point of the opening scene?

And also the scene where VICTOR confronts GRACE about why she is the way she is and she just walks away? At the end, none of that was solved. And it wasn't really explored in the sequel.

It was to show that she has a habit/history of screwing things up with her aggressiveness.

Pobre de Dios que no sale en revistas, que no es modelo ni artista, o de familia royal...

I think it was just included to show that she has a bad case of the not-gays. See cause she was in love with that boy. Shallow I know, but mainstream Hollywood has a tendency to instantly ensure we don't have a doubt about main characters sexuality.

Actually, I believe it was more because she was just socially awkward, and as the second poster said, aggressive/feminist from an early age. It was setting up a pattern for why she is as she is. She doesn't know how to positively relate/socialize with people, and also thinks that those women who act "too" feminine are airheads with no substance. It helped set up the story and explained the turnaround at the end when she realizes that while some may be airheads, mostly, they're just down to earth, nice, friendly women who support each other and are willing to work together when needed. And to try and show that pageants aren't just gawk-fests (which I'm not sure they aren't).

Opening scene: If she hadn't messed up, she might have been put in charge of the pageant operation instead of Eric.

Why she is the way she is: IIRC a deleted scene mentions that her mother was an FBI agent who was killed in the line of duty when Gracie was young. There is also a deleted scene with her father when he is getting remarried, but I don't remember the details.

1) I meant the scene where she was a kid.
2) I read about that, but that's not canon.

It's to show her tomboy nature. Yes, and that she's not gay. People are that stupid. Lived with it all my life - lol. They assume you're gay if you don't play all the feminine games. Lesbians loved me. Too bad I'm not gay.

reply

The opening scene is to set up the conflict that is seen throughout the movie. She is a tomboy and never grows out of wanting to do masculine things. She's fighting with the boys to prove she's right about who's plotting to bomb the beauty pageant.

reply

The point of having the first scene was to show how gracie grew up to relate why she was tough in the first place and what made her become the person that she is.
