Adult bullying

The movie is a great representation of adult bullying. Let's just ignore the over the top ''comedy'' aspects of the movie that wouldn't happen in real life (earn falling down, burning up the altar) and focus on the behavior of the family towards him. It's spot on. This is exactly the type of thing that happens in real the real world which is why the movie resonated with a lot of people.

Snarky, underhanded vicious bullying of people deemed ''lesser'' than them.
