How come the Medjai did not stop the cult ?

Why didn't the Medjai attempt to stop the cult from retrieving Imhotep ? They could have simply attacked the excavation site while Imhotep was being extracted. Or later on, they could also have attacked the train that Imhotep and the cult was travelling in.

In the first movie, the Medjai fighters played a more active role, such as harrassing Rick and his friends on the boat, as well as raiding the tomb when Rick and his team was trying to find Imhotep.

Whereas in this second movie, only Ardeth Bay directly fought against the cult. I felt that the Medjai could have easily taken on the cult, as they are better trained and have more personnel.
