Why *did* she betray him?

After all the trouble she went to finding him, resurrecting him, and going to the Scorpion King's pyramid with him - which was a devil of a lot - why does Anck-su-namun suddenly leave Imhotep high and dry when things get hairy? She freaking killed herself so they could be together, but all of a sudden she isn't interested? This seemed really contrived and out-of-the-blue, plus the fact that it makes you feel awful for Imhotep; the look on his face is heartbreaking, and you almost want to forgive him for the horrible things he did, and tried to do.

I think she more than likely felt lust and infatuation for him than real love. After all what values can you expect after messing with another man's woman? It's no surprise that she abandoned him at the last moment and preferred to save herself but still died.

It is an interesting play of opposites, though. The temple is collapsing, Rick and Imhotep are hanging on for dear life. Rick implores Evy to leave him, and save herself and Alex, while Imhotep begs Anck-su-namun to save him. Evy instead runs into the jaws of death to save her husband, running the risk of throwing away her life and leaving Alex parentless, out of raw love. The family barely escapes with their lives, but they escape alive and well, their love stronger than ever. While on the other side of the coin, Anck-su-namun ignores Imhotep's cries for help, and runs away to save herself. Grief-stricken, Imhotep lets himself be dragged into the underworld, while Anck-su-namun gets eaten alive by scorpions. Both their lives thrown away and wasted, their love discarded.

Agreed. (They were scarabs though).

reply

Yes, it's all about contrasting the cutting and running of one couple, to the selfless dedication to one another, of the other.

reply

No, they would have been scorpions, because they were in the pyramid of the Scorpion King.

The "behavior" was un-scorpionlike and was just like the scarabs in the first film. Yes, the CGI is of scorpions but it really should have been scarabs. And by the way, either way, she got what she deserved.

Because director is an *beep*

It was a dumb scene.

She betrays him because, oddly, she is more megalomanic, narcissistic and self-obsessed than he is. Crappy as her dark afterlife existence had been, at least while in it she was immortal. But now that she's back in a mortal body, she experiences a mortal fear, and serves that fear rather than ideals, including her "love" for Imhotep.

reply

I have no doubt that she loved him, but she loved herself more. She'd be willing to risk her life for him, even die for him if she believed he wold resurrect her again, but not die with him. With the temple collapsing, she didn't think they would make it out together, so she left him behind. She did love him, just not enough. Or maybe spending 3000 years in Hell made her too afraid to risk her life again.

reply

Well Woman have a habit of jumping ship when things get tough or something/someone better comes along.. and that reflected here.

She never loved him, she just loved what he had. Money and Power.
There's more to Imhotep than just an evil raging monster, pity the film didn't dwell on it to much but at least it got the message across.

reply

Well, she didn’t really betrayed him. She loves him. Its not about money and power. She has all these while being the woman of the King. She even killed herself trusting that Imhotep would somehow bring her back. That is a daring bet if you ask me.

She wants security. Someone who is capable and is willing to protect her. Imhotep is immortal, and that’s what she needs. But even when he lost all his power and becomes mortal, she practically begs him to leave. She didn’t want anymore money or power. She only wants him with her to be safe. But he was arrogant. He wanted to fight on with all his power gone.

I think she has done too much for him and its time for her to save herself. He is a very irresponsible lover. How can he expect his lover to come and save him on such a dangerous situation. When Rick tells his wife to save herself, Imhotep tells her to risk her life to save him. What kind of a man is that? Disappointed? Heart breaking? He should be. At himself.

reply

When you love someone you don't turn your back on them and leave them for dead.
She was in fact using him, by that point he could offer her no more, she had no more use for him.

Imhotep like most men are foolish and stupid enough to fall in love, their hearts will always get broken.

reply

Give this gender-blame thing a rest. It's SCRIPTED, remember? And don't act like women don't get their hearts broken too. Men and women are both ugly to each other.

the soul of Anck Namun was possessing Meela. Meela while she may have been the physical reincarnation of Anck Namun, at the end of the movie Meela regained control and came to her senses that she probably had enough of the supernatural crazynesss going on with Imhotep etc
