No Tron Sequel Being Made

I've heard from a very high source that there will be no Tron sequel being made. There were a few drafts of scripts, but thats it. Disney killed it.

reply

that would suck, I do hope you're wrong. Is your source reliable?

reply

Well, that's a downer. Any particular reason why?

I suppose Disney is putting their energy into getting the Tron 2.0 videogame ready for this spring. Understandable, but unfortunate. Though it's probably better suited to a PC of game system, I would have loved to have seen a live-action rendition of the Electronic World 20 years from when Tron came out.

Not to take away from anything that you've said, but I'm still going to hold out the faintest glimmer of hope that the sequel that I've been dying to see for the last 20 years will still see the light of day.

reply

According to the "Making of Tron", Disney is VERY interested in a sequel and have been trying to get Lisberger to sign off on the idea. Ironically, he's been reluctant.

The Disney exec said that "if a story comes along", it could happen. I think Lisberger's reservation stems from how cookie cutter CGI is now and how easy a new TRON film could potentially blend in with the rest of CG Hollywood.

Here's to crossed fingers...

I just love how people with "high sources," which they never name, always feel the need to make statements like this. It's kind of like that kid you knew 20 years ago in high school who had to be the first to say "my daddy has one of those...". Anyway...hope the movie happens, but don't believe all of the spin folks...

reply

From what I know, if this game sells well there will be a sequel to TRON. So go out there and show your support by buying this game. And also its a great looking game as well!

reply

And, hey, you know, the game came out first last time, as well. That was one of my first ventures into an arcade. Crap, that was a long time ago. They were doing a special feature at Aladdin and had the game in the center of the arcade with ropes around it and the attendant even escorted you to the game. Now that I think about that, it's pretty hilarious, but was serious stuff 20 years ago to a fantasy/sci-fi loving twelve year old. I enjoyed the movie and was always disappointed that it tanked at the box office. Come on Lisenberg, get off your butt! Let's get it OUT!

"Lets not allow another Tron movie to be made," said The Disney Exec, "let's just cram another Winnie the Pooh movie down our audience's throat and all will be well. I mean it's not like we have no fresh ideas left!" The exec then fled the room in a teary-eyed fit.

Pretty cool write-up about the video game and its potential to persuade the execs at Disney to (re)consider a sequel.

reply

Peter Pan 2. Jungle Book 2. Beauty and the Beast 2. Lion King 2. Little Mermaid 2. Cinderella 2. Alladin 2 & 3. Why in God's name won't sequel-happy Disney make a TRON 2.0? It just doesn't compute. I hope some big-wig Disney exec is reading these boards. Everybody I know (seriously, everybody) was looking forward to the sequel. And they squashed it. I don't recall anybody saying, "Wow, man... I wanna see what happened to Cinderella next!" Something is horribly wrong here, and we need to try something to fix it!

And, on a slightly unrelated tangent (or cosine), Bugs Bunny would OWN Mickey Mouse, and whoever decided to remove the Submarine Ride should burn.

As much as I liked a lot of the original versions of the movies you mentioned, I wasn't thrilled with the whole lot of their sequels that have flooded the market within the last few years. Cinderella was one of my favorite stories growing up, and when she went riding off with the Prince at the end of the movie, I was content to leave the story at that. About the only Disney movie I've been dying for a sequel to has been Tron.

Do you think Walt Disney would be turning cartwheels in his grave over all the crappy sequels his eponymous studio's spawned?

reply

Well, I have heard that there will in fact be a sequel to the movie made. The working title is Tron:Killer App...so fingers crossed it goes ahead and lets hope its as original and cool as the first !

reply

As far as I can tell, the sequel is going ahead. I have no idea what the title will be, but they are discussing how the movie should look. The attempt is to make it look like the original, but updated a bit. Kind of like a nastagic return, only better.

i believe there is a new tron sequal being made, hell i just picked up Tron 2.0 a few days go from traveling inside 2 company computer networks, busting a firewall, dominating 3 gameing grids and going through one password protected P.D.A., 2 resolution machines and if you have your character I.d. turned on there are so many inside jokes they named characters i came across one guy named norton 3.6.7 HAHAHAHA like as in norton anti virus, and the second in command the "kernal" oh come on it doesn't get any better then that....syd maer's revision to the light cycles OH MY GOD once your straped into those suckers and going full bore down the grid against 4+ players damn its off the chain!! i really do hope steve lisberger, syd maer, bruce boxlieter, jeff bridges and last but not least cindy morgan sit down and go over a proposal for a sequal theres so much electronics on the market now they really don't need to remain in any one location they can jump or transfer electronics to electrons from a computer to an i-pod from an i-pod to a P.D.A from a PDA to a cell phone to god knows what!!!!! the opertunitys are endless and the loyal legion of tron fanatics will be there in force to see the film!!!! or create a whole brand new batch of heros like jethro bradley and bring alan/tron, cindy/yuri/ma3a ect back in cameo roles to set the stroy going

PLEASE IM BEGGING YOU DISNEY MAKE A TRON 2.0 FOR THE MOVIE THEATERS!!!!!!

reply

There's no Syd Maer invovled in the making of Tron 2.0. Sid Meier is the guy who made Pirates!, Civilization II, and SimGolf. Syd Mead is the guy who did the original light cycles for the movie and helped out with the game.

By the way, the light cycles suck. Aside from the jumping puzzles, it's the worst part of the game. The arena is far too big to actually do anything in, and most of my time on the game grid was spent driving around in my own little corner as the computer derezzed itself. I mean, seriously...power-ups in the light cycle grid? And a tricked out light-cycle? Weak.

The game itself is really good, and captures the essence of the Tron universe very well when it isn't making you do retarded jumping puzzles or race lightcycles out of nowhere. Hopefully a sequel gets made, there's obviously lots of room for one.

reply

Hmmm... A Tron sequel set in a cell phone or a palm-top... I'm intrigued...

Want a good lightcycle game?

You can select speed, arena size etc., even has 3D graphics, and is only 3.3mb to download! Music is very good too, and you can play two or four player splitscreen on the same computer with different keys. No online yet, but it is very well supported, and version 1.0 still hasn't been released...

reply

If they ever do a Tron sequel (it will never be made, though), you know WHO they have to cast? Yep you got it, Hugo Weaving. I mean, he's going to play programs forever, now.

"So, Mr Flynn... Welcome back."

First off with a reply to a quote: "Do you think Walt Disney would be turning cartwheels in his grave over all the crappy sequels his eponymous studio's spawned?" --> i'm betting my present, past and future lives on it he does. Those studio execs are tooootally f**king up the magic Walt presented the world and especially their children. EVERYBODY who experienced the originals are now bashing their heads till their blood paints the walls about those f**king sequels.... WHY oh WHY go on about it? where's the magic in that? Kids can't enjoy fantasizing about the further lives of the main characters anymore (of the originals) because they continue in the next. Maybe it's because i'm no longer a kid and i'm too extreme in this thinking. Maybe it's true that kids today don't even pay attention to those details. Maybe they ARE too young to notice or ponder about that....
Anyway.. i'm deflecting here a bit..
What i have to say about a Tron sequel.... NO F**KING WAY!!!!
Everybody who even THINKS for a nanosecond to make a sequel (or remake) on ANY movie (a series of movies that are necessary because they simply cannot b told in ONE feature are excluded -by the way: i do NOT believe the Matrix was originally MENT to be a trilogy, so F**K that too-) should die horribly and suffer in the deepest pits of hell for all eternity!! (nhehe, sometimes i just loooove using clichés) As much as i loooove Tron i would NOT appreciate it if it were to be remade or be followed by another sequel. I DO however wonder how it would've looked in these times of CGI bullsh*t, but goddammit let that b the beauty of it all! it all adds up to the magic of Tron! It is fun to think about stuff that just doesn't exist, when you actually have a real product wich you can see, it takes away your joy of fantasizing (especially after seeing an original). It's one of the greatest classics and it should be left alone.
One more remark on The Matrix: "Where we go from there, is a choice I leave to you" (-Neo). With these words, The Matrix ends. And so should it have stayed. That was a perfect reflection of how it should've been, and as it should be with Tron (and EVERY movie to be made in the future). The freedom of your imagination after seeing a great movie.
Now i'm gonna end this reply ass i started it with a quote from one of the greatest bands ever: "LET IT BE"!!

Mnemosyne-9

P.S.: CECIL B. DEMENTED FOR PRESIDENT!! (ow, sh*t, that's right, he went up in flames...) ME FOR PRESIDENT!!
"POWER TO THE PEOPLE WHO PUNISH BAD CINEMA!!"

reply

Why not a Tron sequal? I'd like to see Pixar do it, or an anime company run with it, screw disney, and make a worthy sequal to their crap.

Disney would kill a TRON sequel...

It would be so politicaly correct that it would disappear up its own prostyrear.
it would just be another spy kids render.

All I can say to this thread is... Good!

I'm just kidding, never participated in anything Tron myself. I've heard good things about the game though, from shady sources.

"I'm just kidding, never participated in anything Tron myself. I've heard good things about the game though, from shady sources."

So what are you here for?

reply

That's a real shame. Sheesh. I thought maybe Charlie O' Connel or his bro Jerry would be a dead (or should I say de-rezzed) ringer for the Jet Bradley character. There is so much that could be done with that story. Thanks alot Disney. Narnia was pretty good and I hope there's more in that series, but it's kinda sad when you can't even remember where all of the technical wizardry all started. There's so much that could have been done. Maybe by a miracle, someone will actually read this post and hope for the best. Should I say now that something like Tron is at least somewhat wholesome when it comes to entertainment and apparently this can't even sell because everyone wants all of the worst when it comes to video games and the like? So Disney has lost its sense of fun eh?

reply

4 years later and it appears to be true. Oh well. There are lots of times sequels don't live up to the first movie.

On January 13, 2005, Walt Disney Pictures announced a new Tron movie (possibly a remake), with more emphasis on the Internet. This project was also hinted at previously in the new documentary that was filmed for the 20th-anniversary DVD, which was released in January 2002.

On September 11, 2007, it was reported that "director Joseph Kosinski is in final negotiations to develop and direct 'Tron, described as 'the next chapter' of Disney's 1982 cult classic. Sean Bailey is producing via the Live Planet banner, as is Steven Lisberger, who co-wrote and directed the original film." The film will be written by Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, writers on the television show LOST.

Well, it took 5 years, but Disney announced on July 24th 2008 that the sequel is not only being made but looks absolutely amazing in its 21st century guise. a 3 Minute "proof of concept" of "TR2N" was played to a crowd at Comic Con at the end of a Disney forum on "Race To Witch Mountain" which included Jeff Bridges in the guise of Kevin Flynn AND as a new, darker and more evil "Clu"

No movie will 2010/11 but with Steven Listberger on board and apparent involvement from Pixar animation, this looks set to be a massive move forward for the Tron franchise.
