Hang on, why was a baby born to only this woman?

Why global infertility?
Why a baby born to only this woman?
How would the baby's survival have any effect on the nation at large?
Why all the deportations?

The context needs some of these questions answered to not only reveal deeper stakes than 'guy helps woman protect baby incidentally during a global baby-shortage', but to open up other storytelling possibilities in terms of plot.

Don't watch "Melancholia" - you'd hate that.

Spot on. I hated it with a passion of the christ

What a thread, I agree with the OP The concept of global infertility is too preposterous for me to be drawn in to the remainder of the story, period.

As Fabulous stated, the "clever" part of story telling is for the viewer / reader to be drawn in to something that "could quite", "maybe", "possibly" happen. That is the basic foundation of good writing. This film doesn't qualify, so it's Sci-Fi or fiction, with a lot of unnecessary violence and chase scenes to boot.

This is not high or even good quality writing.

Gosh, I think you're one of the first people on here to register the importance of probability in this story :) Out of curiosity, how much of this thread did you read?

reply

I read most of it but tried to scan through and skip the arguments not related to the main topic.

That was one of CoM's major failings -- very little backstory. I expected a lot more from this movie than it delivered.
