What happened Tobe?

this man is a horror legend! the texas chainsaw massacre, salem's lot, poltergeist, and eaten alive are all starred on his resume, and then he goes on to make this crap. i saw this movie on CABLE less than a year after it came out and i had to shut it off. even lake placid was better (as far as crocodile movies go), and it's in the clearance bin in the movie store where i work. interesting.
the acting in this movie is laughable, but it's true that horror movies shouldn't be graded on their acting. the cgi was horrifying. i could have used a toy croc and given it more realistic features. i like bad horror...but i expect it from directors and writers who are known for bad horror (*cough* mark jones...*cough* leprechaun series).
it also seems this wasnt just a hiccup, there have been other horrible movies from the likes of this great director even before this travesty. the mangler and many of his latter projects are just as bad...it seems steven king is going to the dogs as well. i guess true horror is dead.

i found this movie very entertaining...it is a terrible film, but still entertaining.

having said that it is hard to believe that it was made by Tobe Hooper.

reply

the movie was horrible
but indeed entertaining
every horror movie is entertaining
except for AVP and resident evil 2 that is

<every horror movie is entertaining>

You're easily entertained then.

This was good for DVD.Though I was kind of surprised some major did not gobble it up after Lake Placid's modest success.

I think maybe Tobe signed for a different movie or something. It had some potential to be a good movie.

I find it entertaining as well.Just as long as you don't think about Hoopers past genre hits and ponder how did the Man who brought us TCM,Eatan Alive,Salems Lot,The Funhouse,Poltergiest,Lifeforce, and TCM2 do to deserve this?

Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead.

I saw this tonight, I'll have to say I liked Eaten Alive much better. Even if the croc in that movie looked really low budget. It was just a much better movie and alot more fun to watch. The teenagers in this movie were just stupid, I'm glad the croc came after them. It's not a horrible movie, but not the best ever. I'd give it a rental and a 6/10

I cant believe this was directed by tobe hooper. When i saw this in the shop and saw it was directed by tobe hooper and that it was only £1 i thought to myself how can it be a bad film with a director like that at the helm, unfortunatly this film is terrible, the actors seem fairly capable but the dialogue and story were pretty poor, the characters i found were the most annoying scumbags ive seen on screen and i just wanted all of them to die.
Also the special effects for a film that came out in 2001 are awful.

Ps whos stupid idea was it to have the crocodile jump out of the water and over a boat and for that stupid annoying dog not to get eaten in the first five minuites.

If you want some croc action try alligator , alligator 2 & lake placid before watching this movie.

If u think tis one bad see the second one ohh man is it bad or what!!!

reply

Hey leave Toolbox Murders out of this! I thought that one was pretty good. Mortuary on the other hand was a piece of shiite. Crocodile was ok for a rental but nowhere near the brilliance Tobe has shown in the past.

reply

hahaha thats the same reasons its roped me!! tobe hooper/ a quid! must be good!
how wrong i was! i even thought it must be worth seeing through to the end just to see all these tools get eaten but no! the guy who annoyed the *beep* out me the most didnt even die!!

reply

I can't believe the man who made one of the best horror movies of all time made this b-movie piece of sh!t, this is the sort of film that you'd find in the bargin section which is sat next to one of ulli lommels countless dvd releases. WHY TOBE WHY?????? At least Toolbox murders was good which makes up for this piece of cr@p, we should just pretend he never made this film.

All right ramblers, lets get rambling.

Man most of the people on here must not like good movies because this one and the 2nd one with both great much better than Lake Placid which is more of a comedy and not a horror movie.

reply

I agree, this was a nightmare. I would'nt mind if he'd put some effort in, but this is unrecognisable as a work of Tobe Hooper. It's a real shame, cos the guy undoubtedly has talent but used none of it here. Why bother? You don't need to do this stuff Tobe, sort it out.

'Can you fly Bobby'

Give the guy a break. He needed the money and even though they gave him a small budget he did the best he could with what was given. He should have put in his contract that he could use an alias though so his name wouldn't show up on it but of course the producers needed his name to sell the product. No crocodile tears from me though, he did it, and sold his soul to the croc's greedy appetite for bucks.

What happened Tobe?

What do you mean "What happened"? This is the best -- or one of the best -- crocogator flicks out there and my personal favorite.

A lot of people on this thread say things like "It's a terrible movie, but it's definitely entertaining." Answer: Movies are created to make money through entertaining people. If you were entertained by "Crocodile" it must not be that terrible. Entertainment is the name of the game in cinema.

I'd watch "Crocodile" any day over Tobe's "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre."

I agree with your sentiments here.

I regularly see people say stuff like "All the Friday the 13th films are horrible, yet I've watched them 100 times each and keep returning" or other variations of that sentiment. How can it be horrible if you watch it time and time again and profuse your love for it? It obviously appeals to you on a strong level and you enjoy it greatly.

This is the whole art vs entertainment debate. Some people view films as entertainment, something to enjoy. Others view it as an art form and will praise a film because it has good production values even if they didn't like it at all and will never rewatch it again in their life.

There is a strong strain of groupthink in film fandom, where you're expected to like certain films and people fall for it line, hook and sinker instead of forming their own opinion.

I'm big on rewatchability. Hypothetically if you were to go to a deserted island and had to draft a selection of films for your duration. You're taking the film you watch time and time again and love, over the acclaimed film you saw once a decade ago and gave a good rating because you're expected to like it by 'cinephiles'.

People slandering Hooper for this film are way off base. The Direct-to-Video market for creature feature Horror has it's limitations, tropes and expectations. He delivered what is expected of this breed of film. I'm really not sure what film people were expecting of a low budget, DTV killer Crocodile flick from the year 2000.

After seeing Coppola's "You're a Big Boy Now" (1966) last night, I was coincidentally reflecting on the art vs. entertainment conundrum because he made a flick with obvious artistic flare that didn't forget to be entertaining.

Tobe's "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is definitely more artistic, but I find "Crocodile" more entertaining, although Sommer Knight (Sunny) is wholly artistic, lol.
