Duncan's Unspoken Crush on Brady (Spoilers)

No one has mentioned the devious sub-plot of Duncan McKay's (Chris Solari's) making a big, though unspoken, effort to land Brady Turner (Mark McLachlan) as more than just a friend. Consider the evidence:

1. Duncan knows that Brady is going out with Claire (Caitlin Martin) and knows that Sunny (Sommer Knight) has the hots for Brady. Yet Duncan is the one who invited Sunny along for the trip. Duncan makes no moves on Sunny. The motive must be the hope that Sunny would cause Brady and Claire to break up.

2. In the football game played in shallow water, Duncan jokingly pulls down Brady's shorts, exposing Brady's rear briefly.

3. When Duncan's plot to split up Brady and Claire works, Brady does not go to Duncan. Instead Duncan makes a half-hearted pitch for Claire. Claire knew both Brady and Duncan from high school. So when she remarks that Duncan wants Brady and not her and when Duncan makes no response to such a potentially inflamatory statement, they both believe it.

4. Duncan confesses at the end that he arranged for Brady to be expelled from high school. This would mean that higher-performing Brady would have to go to the same lesser college that took Duncan. Duncan said that having Brady go to a different college would have made Duncan feel "alone".

5. When Brady has his confrontation with Flat Dog, Duncan goes all out and then some to provide a distraction and rescue. It was more intense than a general buddy-teamwork effort.

6. One might reinterpret Duncan's early speech as he drove Brady to Lake Sobek. Duncan compared pizza to sex. A great pizza (think Claire) is great, like sex; a bad pizza (think Duncan) is still pretty good (sex).

I expect Brady to stick with Claire and eventually to find Duncan's plots too destabilizing.

I think you're reading into this too much. Duncan was selfish; he didn't want Brady to go to that one college because Brady is probably his only friend, and that's what he meant by being "alone." As far as pulling Brady's shorts down, that's something many, many immature juveniles do to their buddies - nothing out of the ordinary there.

After the houseboat is demolished, and the group is walking through the forest, one of the girls taunts him with the innuendo, referring to Duncan's "boyfriend". Later, as Brady tries to make up with Claire, she makes the remark that she doesn't want to break it to him, but "it's no longer just about you and me", and walks away. While they are waiting on the beach for crocodile to show up so that they can try to spear it, Duncan begins his confession, Claire feels that he about to say something about his feelings, and tells him to save for later (Duncan actually confesses to the cheating set-up, but Claire lets Brady know know that she could have told him as much). So yeah, it was definitely part of the plot, and the characters (i.e., the girls) were well aware of Duncan's intense feelings for Brady.

Nah, you're just seeing what you wanna see. If Duncan was gay, they could've, and should have explored that character development. From what I recall, Brady was his only friend, and he just didn't like Clair, whom didn't like him back.

This is a movie from 2000 the most you would get was subtext, there was no such thing as gay character character development.

reply

Only a GAY *beep* would read that into the film

Only a neanderthal spam-for-brains would object.

Get REAL, and I mean that literally.

Duncan is 1 of the most face-punchable, torture-deserving, scumbag human pustules ever. The gay subtext is palpable.
