Why not use a real rock star?

So if they used real rock stars singing over M.W's parts why not cast a real rock star to play the role instead?

reply

That would be great, except find a rock star who can act!

reply

With some training there has got to be someone out there who could. Besides that would have made the movie so much better and they wouldn't have had to dubb in someone else's voice.

But what was wrong with MW?

reply

Well besides the ridiculous wig, Walberg is not charasmatic enough for a role such as this.

reply

Whats funny is the kid he pulls out of the crowd in the end went onto become a huge rock star, Myles Kennedy went on to form the great alter bridge

reply

What about Jon Bon Jovi? He acted in films.

reply

Because Jon Bon Jovi meets Judas Priest makes sense to you?

reply

Not every rock star wants to act. I remember Joan Jett acting in the movie "Light Of Day". She said she wouldn't do something like that again because the process of making that movie kept her away from music for about eight months.

reply

Because people go to the movies to see Mark Walberg and not some wanna be rock star who cannot act, and may be a nobody tomorrow. There are only a few Mick Jaggers out there who both rock and act with the best of them, and only an unknown would have fit the part, so they went with the money maker.

Anyway with your logic, why would they have Denzel Washington play a pilot in his movie "Fight" when they could have got a real pilot to play the part? Why choose Arnold to play the Terminator, when they could have got a real terminator play the part? Hmm...

reply

You're right because I only went to see this movie because I'm a MW fan. This is the era that I grew up in, but this was not my scene. If he wasn't in it, I wouldn't have seen it.

reply

"real terminator" made me bust out

reply

Its's funny you'd say that. Mark Wahlberg used to be a pop singer (Marky Mark)

reply

It's a great question. I recently saw MMW in The Fighter and I wondered "hey, why didn't they use a boxer for this movie?" Then, I saw The Departed. And I asked myself "hey, why didn't they use a cop for this movie instead of just a silly actor."

And it's not just Mark Wahlberg movies. I was watching a Christmas movie last week and I could not figure out for the life of me why they didn't use real elves. And why are they putting people in alien costumes for all of the sci-fi movies? Couldn't they just hire real extraterrestrials?

Then I realized that these are actually movies. And the people who work on movies are actors. And actors are what attract viewers. It's an industry. It's a business. Their goal is to create a product that makes money. If realism is the primary goal, they would just make a documentary.

This!

Why not use a real rock star? Because it's a movie, not a concert.

Agreed. I think MW was cast to bring in the cash and they lost out on a great opportunity to be creative while honoring the subject matter. (I would have LOVED to be the casting director for a film like this.)

There is a pretty solid history of rock stars with acting chops:
David Bowie
Iggy Pop
Mick Jagger
Henry Rollins
Jared Leto (I think he's an actor who is a rock star actually)
Flea
Sting
Gene Simmons

And this list is just the guys!
