Not Bad (for a Brit film)

It lacked the polished quality of the big studios but, all in all, not bad considering it comes from a people who toast their bread on only one side.

Well, this is also the country that gave you amazing movies like The Third Man, Lawrence of Arabia, Snatch. Life of Brian (And the other Monty Python movies), A Clockwork Orange, Trainspotting and my personal favorite Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. All of them great and fantastic movies.

The Brits ain't that bad when it comes to movies, in fact, they've made a lot of great ones as well.

Dead Man's Shoes is another good (and underrated) British film

The Brits have made heaps of great movies, and that's coming from an Aussie ;P

Dead Men's Shoes is awesome :)

I guess you never seen Snatch.

Yeah, it lacked the "big studio" stuff so maybe that's why it was so good.

Well said.

I quite liked The Bank Job, but then again, I'm a little prone to liking anything Jason Statham is in, (with the exception of Snatch), but I LOVED Lock Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels--probably my fav of any British movie--and it was the first film I saw Jason in.

I think British movies are quite good now days. The thing with British humour is that it's incredibly dry, and often it's very 'between the lines'. While it appears to be stuffy, I find most British humour is sexual inuendo, which I find hilarious!

Gone are the days of:
"Tea?"
"Yes. 2 lumps please."
"Biscuit?"
"Yes, please. I do believe the post has arrived..."
(as in: all said in the same humdrum, flat, emotionless voice and without the slightest change of facial expression that previous generations produced).

Now it's (quotes from Lock Stock):
"It's a deal; it's a steal; it's the sale of the *beep* century.."
"Guns for show; Knives for a pro."
"I'd feel safer with a chicken drumstick."
"You look as though you're fat, but you're not, but you should be."

Which people are those then?
Here in the UK we toast our bread on both sides.

I think someone has been telling you tall tales...

Oh...I see.
Completely missed the reference!

Yes, he was quite funny - just left me a little confused.

I really hope that was a joke

yeah us brits have done loadsa quality stuff....and even some hollywood movies use the studios in britain when doing their movies.

How would you even toast your bread on one side? Your toaster would need to be broken.

reply

The only Brit I know who toasts his bread on one side is Sting.....he happens to be a ponce.

Whether you're a Harry Potter fan or not you can't deny it will never date and always be great movies for those who like the genre. Likewise Lord of the Rings. AND you can't deny the 'hollywood gloss' with these films.

As stated earlier this film and many other Brit films do not have the hollywood gloss but for some of us its more appealing because its raw and seems more 'real'

I'm an aussie who loves Brit films (and films from other countries) because they're often totally original and quirky instead of the same ol' same ol' from the hollywood factory.

big fan of the coen bros tho.

reply

Ah-jesus...

Welcome to the modern world pal.

And btw, these movies are meant to "lack the polished quality"... They're gritty, feel much more real, and that's why the Brits rule at making Gangster movies.

I'd have to say a much higher percentage of british films are good, compared to the stuff thats churned out in hollywood (though you get some quality stuff once you've sifted through all the horse sh*t).

Though I just look for a good film, i don't care where it's from... meh.

reply

Absolutely. Most of the stuff that comes out of Hollywood is pure *beep*

Blowin' the changes!

reply

Call me old-fashioned (I'm 72) but I did enjoy the old British heist movies like "The League of Gentlemen," "The Ladykillers," "The Lavender Hill Mob," which were not only clever but also funny. BTW, wasn't there another tunneling-to-the-bank movie recently that also took place in England?

reply

Did you ever stop to think movies that comes out of Hollywood'a back end actually are just polished bulls**t? Just because a movie cost $300.000.000 to make and it's been CGI'ed to hell and back doesn't mean it's any good..

As an Aussie, I think the Brits make the BEST films and have the BEST sense of humor. they are a very intellegent bunch. (followed closely by us Aussies of course;-) )

I'm a huge fan of British cinema, but I feel compelled to point out that despite spending a considerable amount of time in the UK, Kubrick is still technically an American director, born and raised in New York City.

reply

Seriously, can't help but hate the whole "polished big studio look" in most movies. That look is needed only in fantasies and not realistic films. The grungy, gritty, camera moving look is a lot cooler, makes the audience pay attention, and one has to actually use one's mind to decipher the nuances of the scene.

I would like to add "Death at a Funeral" to the previously long list of good British movies.

Huge ego, sorry.

Considering the incredible amount of crap the US and A produce (and I am referring exclusively about movies), The Bank Job feels like a masterpiece!
Just compare this film with Crank, War, The Transporter, etc. All of them movies where Jason Statham have starred. Those are the most moronical films he has ever shot. If you wanna see a better flick with Jason on it, you should see his first brit films, such as 'Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels' or 'Snatch.'
If most Amurrikans are like the OP, no wonder why Transformers 2, Terminator Salvation, G.I. Joe are so *beep* popular in USA.

reply

Sorry, but the OP was clearly making a joke (as anyone with a sense of humor could see). Obviously most of the Brits and Americans and Aussies didn't get it.

Guess the British are just waaaaay more sensitive than us Yanks.

reply

Does that render us more intelligent at the same time, then ? I prefer low key Brit films, we can't really do modern age blood & thunder, as well, we expect that to come from the US.

One of my fave Brit films, Kweekes - part written & characterized by the actors thmselves. It's like Eastenders, except you don't feel like slitting your wrists watching it.

<<Does that render us more intelligent at the same time, then ?>>

Well if you want to tell yourself that . . . . I'M not saying it. :-)

As for low-key British films and a lack of blood and thunder, I find most (not all) British films fall into one of two categories: either a costume drama (Pride & Prejudice, etc.) or one of those "life sucks and then you die" type of films (Trainspotting, The Full Monty, etc.) The first type are just nauseating (and this is from a woman!) and the second are okay to watch when I'm feeling far too happy and content with life.

Every now and then Guy Ritchie will thrown in a passable British "gangsta" film just to give the industry some street cred. Oh and because he'd like to be known as something other than Mr. Madonna.

I haven't seen Life is Sweet yet. I'll have to put it in my film queue. And those daughters have some, um, high voices. My eardrums hurt!

reply

<<Those "life sucks and then you die" type of films (Trainspotting, The Full Monty, etc.)" >>

As far as I remember those two, they ended on a real high note ?? If you want to know about a proper "life sucks & then you die" film , just ask Travis Bickle .

FYI not a Guy Ritchie fan - As our Adam & Joe put it, he used a technique to favour himself alongside Tarantino called "copying".

(You may find parody this vaguely amusing)

Also, as he and M have split, you have the bony-handed child-snatcher back your side now

Please do watch L.I.S.. Timothy Spall is one of my fave actors - genuinely funny ( apparently on the set of "White Hunter, Black Heart" he reduced Clint Eastwood to tears ). I want to open a bistro called "Regret Rien" too , just like Aubrey.
