dump the sweety and get with a real ass

anybody notice that the message of this film seemed to be something like: attention teenage girls! cheat on your nice boyfriend with a prick. in the end its for the best.

I don't know but thats what I seemed to get from it.

Just saw this movie it was ok nothing special, but I disagree with the op that the rich guy was a prick. Kelley loved her and he showed it, there was never a time in the film in which he was a jerk towards her or treated her bad. Although yes she was dating Jasper for awhile he's not the one that felt a love connection. Sometimes you may think the person you are dating is the one until you meet someone else that is a little better fit for you. I don't think the message of the film was to dump the poor guy for the rich guy, but rather follow your heart and be true to yourself. She didn't have long to live so she needed to experience love and Kelley was the one that ignited that passion in her. Just because a guy is nice and friend material doesn't mean he is love material.

Yeah, Why would you ever dump Josh Hartnet for Chris Klein...
is she crazy?!?

Kelley was such a jerk! He wouldn't make a real commitment, even though Sam was willing to give up everything she knew for him.

It seems the writers wanted us to have sympathy for him because he came back in the end, but even then it wasn't a real commitment (he knew Sam was dying and he could just go right back to his "rich boy" life after her funeral) Did you get the idea that the speech at the funeral was just a substitute for the one he didn't make at gradaution (IMO The "performance" was more about himself than Sam; he enjoyed being the center of attention).
Jasper, however was the real hero, sticking with Sam as a true friend even after Sam rejected him. He was far more impacted by Sam's death, but was willing to put his own feelings on the back burner so Sam would be happy.

One of the first scenes in the movie really sets the whole thing up: Sam is leaving the house with her mother to go work at the diner, when she sees the Mercedes arriving... that really catches her eye. Made think of the girls who ask "so what do you drive?" Like the girls in the movie An Officer and a Gentleman, she was looking for her ticket out of town.

What's with all the misgogyny guys? There are plenty of movies which show guys as being pricks and dumping the nice girl for the bimbo. Should we assume that guys are like that in real life? Then again, listening to some of you morons, they probably are...

You know what, switch the main male actors, and boom, it would of been a big hit. A 7 at least instead of the 4.7.

There is another movie, I can't think of it, but it was the same, if they switched the male leads, it would of been great!

I completely agree; I could see Josh Hartnett as the hot rich guy who needs a second chance at love and finds Sam. Chris Klein seems exactly an irony to Jasper as he's not used to being ignored by Sam but suddenly is after Kelley comes to town.

Damn casting, if only the two male leads had been changed!

In terms of personality, she had things in common with Kelley. And she was in a really dark place emotionally so her judgment may not have been 100% intact.

But really, what about Jasper made him a nice boyfriend? He helped destroy her family's business, too. Don't forget that. Jasper didn't seem to challenge her. A good friend? Yes, sure, by the end, he definitely was. But just because a guy is nice to you doesn't mean you have to date him either. Who makes your heart patter, your skin grow goosebumps? This whole "nice guys" mentality men use to make themselves martyrs is old.
