New Battlestar Galactica

I saw the Min-Series and i did not like it one bit they have change so much in the 1st some was name after gods like Apollo and in the new one's that is a call si and they have names like we do now so much has changed i will let others add to this and i hope it dies a quick death

reply

If you are a fan of the original series, you can't denie the new series otherwise you are a complete hypocrit. If you would have even bothered to take a decent look at it you would know that Richard Hatch (u know "Apollo" in the originals, just to remind u) plays a very big role in episode 3 of the new series. He even lectures to the new Apollo about his callsign.
A true fan would very much appreciate those references to the original series.

reply

Yes he's a hypocrite because he doesn't like it and prefers the original...

I agree mwengler I hope it dies a quick death and Universe give back the rights to the TV to Glen A Larson who created Battlestar Galactica.

or Atleast give him and Hatch the rights to the big screen film and let them make the second comming which would've been far better than this new re-imagined series by Ron "I only did this because I got fired from Star Trek" Moore.

Hatch still very much wants to do a spin off of the original, for all you know Hatch only agreed to be in the new series so he could make some money and try and fund his Battlestar Galactica projects...

The calls signs are just lame, the new Cylons are Terminator Rip Off's, the new Baltar's character is a complete rip off of the character of Julian Bashir in Star Trek DS9, the Camera work is awful, the CGI effects for the ships is lame, wathcing the classic effects from the 1978 series puts the new series effects and budget to shame...

Lets face it the only reason Moores onboard on Galactica is because 1. he was a whiny baby and didn't like the way Star Trek was going and was booted of the show and 2. Tom Desanto got screwed over for his plan to make a spin off of the original by Universal.

Kinda like how Glen A Larson got screwed over by them when the cancelled the original after one season.

If anyone is a hypocrite it's universal for giving the finger to the fans of the original with this laughable attempt at a new show.

Hopefully it's cancelled in it's first season, wouldn't that be ironic...

Soon Adama, soon - Baltar.

i agree, it is not fair (or logical) to compare the new bsg to the old one, because the new one redefines sci-fi in every sense, and is far superior to even any contemprary tv show. i just hope that it will continue (and it looks that way), it is probably the best sci-fi show ever made.

reply

It's not the best sci fi show but it has gotten much better.
Unlikable characters and predictable storylines plague the show.
Was the season finale a surprise? Not really but it is entertaining.

reply

You might consider the new BSG as a good scifi series, it still hurts to see the original characters being abused like that.
The new BSG's got practically nothing to do with the original, except for the names used.
It would have been a better series if they'd used a different title, different character names and stopped ripping off the old story line.
In short, it would be a good series if they ONLY HAD MADE IT ORIGINAL!!
It's just another example of the attempt (from feeble to desastrous) of movie and series makers to try to level with the gems of old days.

reply

I'm not sure how it 'redefined' anything. A lot of the material which composes the highlights was better done in 'Space: Above And Beyond', which did things in a far more realistic and militarised way. The one with the Red Baronesque Cylon is a case in point.

The new version of this show goes the opposite way and the military thinking seems bizarrely inept, while machines finding religion are not nearly as formidable as the style which could have been borrowed from the 'Terminator' franchise (both in terms of infiltrating models and, except for the third, the way they behave). Instead, much like 'The X-Files', the writers seem to be painting themselves into a sort of metaphysical corner which shouldn't apply if we're dealing with machines which are based on logic and efficiency.

He didn't like the direction Trek was going, just like everyone else. Voyager was for the most part crap and Enterprise gets less ratings on regular tv than the new Battlestar Galactica does on cable.

The new BSG is probably the most well written sci fi show on television right now.

>>> the new Baltar's character is a complete rip off of the character of Julian Bashir in Star Trek DS9<<<

Apart from them both being British know-it-alls their characters are not really alike at all.

Glen Larson had his chance at a comeback with Galactica 1980 with the super kids and the battle against pollution.

Also the new series has been renewed for a 20 episode 2nd season.

Dude, seriously.......were you high when you wrote this? You say the new series has all these ripoffs etc. Hmmm, wasn't the concept of TOS to rip off Star Wars? If you think the 1978 series has better f/x than the new series you need to put the bong down....NOW! The original was great family fun, I liked it as did all of my 8 year old classmates. The same type of mindless goofy plots (Casino planets, space disco, little kids getting into danger simply to be rescued each week) would not stand today. This is the best show I have ever seen and it will last longer than the original. Hell, it's already been renewed for a third season! It's a modern version of the classic I loved as a kid and I could not be happier with the outcome (well i guess I could like it more if there mere a few more naked Cylons thrown into the mix) ;-)

reply

that was always the old line. BSG is a star wars rip-off.

how? because, like luke and han in star wars, starbuck and apollo are a blond and a brunette?

OK OK- they also fly spaceships.

i guess since star wars happened there should be no more sci fi created ever again. that's it. we got star wars. we're all done.

i certainly wish george lucas stopped after empire.

reply

I have to say I don't see how you all think the new series is so bad. It is superior in every way. It has better acting, better character development, better story lines, better action, better everything. The original series was about as campy as you can get. The new series is probably one of the best sci-fi shows produced in the last few years; if not, even longer. The themes they focus on include love, war (obviously), friendship, compassion, tons of moral dilemas, sacrifice, politics, and tons of other issues. If Star Trek fans could embrace Next Generation (which was one of the top 5 sci-fi shows ever made) then you all can embrace this awesome re-make of BG.

Well the difference there is that they didnt use the same characters liek kirk and make him a women in the series and just re use the same characters. The series is set as the 1999 second comming would have been in the future. Years later but the characters remained as they should be. Apolla = richard hatch etc. Same in next generation Kirk is shatner but retired then the ribbon took him away. They didnt piss off or diss the old series int he 60's and the movies of the 80's that started the whole thing. The new series is okay but they really should have jsut made new characters and not told the same story twice. Starbuck is not a woman:) shes great but maybe since its the future later down the road she coudl have been starbucks daughter via casiopia or something and the whole thing couldve happend a generation after the original. but they chose to redo the old one......... oh well.

==========================

Starbuck was originally supposed to be a woman in the original series, but the studio objected on the grounds that a female fighter pilot would be unrealistic. In Star Trek Majel Barrett (she ended up playing the blonde nurse) was supposed to play Kirk's second in command, the studio objected to a woman being second in command, so the character of Spock was created.

reply

The biggest problem with the new series is that they use terms that reflect too much of present day Earth. It's not just language, for we all understand that in order for us to know what they are saying, we accept that they use English in their broadcasts. However, when they start talking about cancer, operations, etc., they should have destroyed Earth and had the people go and find others out there in the universe instead. Or, don't use these concepts. Create new medical problems, social issues, etc. which we, galaxies away, would not have come in contact with.

reply

Ron Moore's argument is, basically, "Why re-invent the chair?" In other words, we know characters have to sit on something, so instead of giving them some sort of weird contraption that looks totally alien to the audience and draws attention to iself... give them a chair.

Similarly, saying "I have cancer" has a helluva lot more of a real, imeadiate impact than saying, "I have Rigellian Lung Disease". To the first, you say, "Oh *beep* that's not good!" To the second you say, "Okaaay... what's that?".

reply

On the language issue.......

As much as I love the fact that the new series has adopted "frak", why haven't we heard a single "felgercarb"?

reply

I bought the DVD of the new BG mini series and I must admit that I am very found of the new one as I still am for the old BG series.

I do agree with some of the things that have been writen about the new BG, but if you keep looking the new BG as if it was a remake you will never be abble to apreciate the new mini series. I do believe that the new BG is an excellent show a side that they use earth therms and names.

reply

ehg71 I agree with you in regards to the 'today' feel of the show.
Unfortunatly I think the (at least my fellow Americans) viewing audiance is a little bit...well.. Lets just sat that they feel everything on TV should have social relevance to what they feel are the current issues.

I'm expecting there to be a 'You stole my election' episode soon.

I grew up on the original show.
I loved it.
I was about 8-10 at the time.
I watch it now and I laugh at the stories.
I watch it now and a I marvel over the high quality effects. Really for it's time it was the killer goods.

I watch the new series.
I did not like it at first.
I decided to give it a fair shot and whatched the entire season.
I am a fan of the new series now.

Plus the 'new' Boomer is really hot.

LOL

reply

THIS IS A VERY GOOD SHOW. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. TO ALL WHO HATE IT I SAY YOU HAVE NO TASTE AT ALL. I SAY THAT IT WILL CONTINUE ON FOR ALL TIME. AND MAY YOU ALL SIT THERE AND WATCH EVERY EPISODE AND LOVE IT!!!

reply

Cylon alert!

reply

I have to agree with you. But, when I 1st watched it I also hated it. The story drew mw in. It is nice to see some things updated. Other things I wish that they had left alone.I think Starbuck should have been a man, instead of a woman trying to be a man.

reply

For my money, the new one sucks. The acting is fine, the crew is fantastic for the work they do. The story just sucks. The lines just suck.

And where in the hell are the centurians??

reply

Are you guys all retarded? The new show is one of the best shows on TV, period! The Shield, Nip/Tuck and Battlestar Gallactica are some of the best TV shows in years!!!

reply

Guys not being American born, I only heard of original BG, unlike Star Wars and Star Trek Next Generation, I never saw a single episode of BG.

Now just literaly now I finished the TV movie that kicks off the series, and I gotta say it is awsome. It is a sci fi movie with a story, and a very interesting one too, also it has heart, something that I can not say about the Star Treck series (Next Gen excludeed). I guess now I need to get my hands on on the rest of the mini series.

And to the fans of the original, I get you guys I ALSO HATE when they change plot and/or charachters in my favorite series ( I WILL BE SUPER PISSED IF IN 35 years someone re made X Files with plot changes and especially charachter changes), but WE gotta have to understand that a REMAKE is A REMAKE becouse of what it does, reshooting evrything in a same way as the orignial but with new CG effects will be just waste of evrybodys time. Good example is the new psych WHICH TANKED in the box office because IT WAS A SHOT BY SHOT copy of the original.

reply

Bottom line, this new version of Galactica sucks. It`s boring, the plot lines are terrible, the acting is awful, the Cylons look human, their Cylon Raiders look like the Bat Wing from the Tim Burton Batman film of 1989,the Egyptian looking uniforms, symbols, ect.of the Glalactica personnel are gone, there is no way of telling this show apart from another awful Sci-Fi Channel show.....Stargate SG1 & it`s spin-off ,Stargate Atlantis!.I blame Universal and I blame the Sci-Fi Channel for bringing this crap to t.v.

reply

You are so right about the New Battlestar Galactica they have change it so much it.

I shall now post a gramatically correct and spellchecked response to the opinions on this board.

The new Galactica has been produced to 21st Century standards and is not the camp, funny, family show of the 70s.

This is a great shame, but that is progress.

You can love the old while enjoying the new. For my money, the effects are great, Mary McDonnell and Eddie Olmos are hardly "crap" actors, and some of the interplay is very well acted, filmed, and directed.

Saying that, I don't think they have the mix right. It's too "Band of brothers" in space. Far too cold and cynical - like a lot of American society.

I don't like the "human cylons". They are far too "out in front" of their mechanical brothers and just NOT SCARY. They just look cheap as it is a load of actors in a wet forest in Vancouver and is just SG1, X-Files, and Outer Limits again. The original series at least tried to make some worlds look alien ("War of the gods") and I'll admit "The lost warrior" was horse manure, but the new show looks boring and cheap.

Like the new "Earth-based" or "grounded" IMO Dr. Who, BSG utilises familiar locales and tries to justify this by claiming an emphasis on the "human element". I like SF, I can see a forest down the road. Can we see more alien locales please? I'd love to see Cylon worlds as I feel that's what good Sci-Fi is about. The unknown, not the continual inference thereof set around the familiar.

I had hoped they would allude more to the old show (Egyptian stuff/ Laser guns/ believeable aliens) and just ditch the rubbish like Hector/ Vector, kids, stupid robots, and overt sexism. I am very, very tired of Moore & Eick's "X-Files set-up" approach - the show generates too many questions and does not reward the viewer.

I'll say that again - Moore & Eick are not giving up the goods. I want answers and I know I'm not alone.

This is a network technique to keep viewers tuning in and to keep the show on the air.

Starbuck can be a girl as long as she's not boring (unfortunately the bolshy, young liberated type portrayed isn't what I would have preffered - I'd like to see less abrasiveness in the character). There's just very little humour between the new Apollo and Starbuck and Boomer is such a whinger lately it makes me want to throttle her!

No blame to the actors here, it's what they're directed to do by script and direction. I am one.

I don't mind traumatised characters in light of what has happened to them, but wish they'd tone it down. And answer more questions! About Cylons!!

I'm glad it is into its second year - now I hope we will have answers, but from what I hear the first 6 episodes are all set-up, then you get some payoff, then it's a filler story about journalism, then ANOTHER cliffhanger.

With the Pegasus...

...damn them!

(you see, I actually quite like the show & care about it or I wouldn't be bothered, but it's all going soooo sloooowly until you reach a great point and then it's the bloody "mid-season break".)

Thanks a bundle!

I'm also sad Tom DeSanto didn't do it as he would have made it a lot better and not drag so much.

Signing off.

JB

There are two main points:

One being, the show is critcically acclaimed. Name any other scifi programming that is on today that shares the kind of sheer huzzah that the new BSG has.

Did any of you TOS BSG-ers think it'd get that kind of attention?

Secondly, what do TOS BSG fan *reasonably* think a new incarnation would have? Do you really think they'd keep those Egyptian helmets and seventies outfits?

While I know it's a cheap effect, I kind of like the fact that the Cylons closely resemble humans. I think it adds an entirely new depth to them that you wouldn't get if they were simpy bee-beep robots like the original.

reply

love the original. haven't seen the new one but its recommended to me so i will rent it.

and i'd like to see a new series or film that dealt with the crew from the original. and yes - with the same suits. those were cool uniforms. they were pretty reserved in design and distinctly UN-seventies. there's not a wide lapel anywhere!

well, maybe on the rising star.

reply

Face it guys, the new BSG is way much better then the old once, u cant even compare em both cosue the new one is in the big leuges. And one more thing, Hatch aint Apollo anymore, Bamber is and i have to say he dose a far better job then Hatch ever did. But the new role that hatch plays "Zarek" is realy good, and suits him good.

Omg u guys are gone kill me for saying this :P

reply

Looking objectively the new BG is far far better than the original one. Just look at the acting and how well the series is written. Add the outstanding FX and you have an instant classic.
But I do miss some of the things TOS had. Namely the epic mythical style. But it's a great success commercialy! Maybe very maybe one day there will be a spin off from TOS, due to the success of the re-imagined series. It is do-able because frankly the two series have very little with eachother to do.

reply

I reply to this post a long timge after it was started, but after watching both seasons released to this point, on television, and again on DVD I have come to the conclusion that the current series is many times better then the original.

Dont get me wrong, the original has its moments, and at that time, was as ground breaking in its special effects, religious undertones, and a few of the story lines of some episodes "for television" then any show till then and many years after.

This BG takes the above statement and moves that bar even higher.

I read through the thread and seen comments about how the worlds are all the same, with forests and rain. Umm guys, to have a breathable atmosphere for humans, forests and trees are sort of needed. These are worlds that humans lived on, do you not think they would pick planets to live on that are similar to ours. Similar from what they originated from. As for alien species, well I believe there is other life in the galaxy, but right now, we are the only ones we can prove, so having a show where humans, and that which they created be center stage on the show is not hard to understand.

Comments on other "Similar" things in the show to us, Ok, I will admit the car scenes were a little too much like us. I do think that transportation would look extremely different given that FTL travel is possible in the story line, but yet they still travel in 4 wheel vehicles that look strangely like a Humvee. However, medical stuff like cancer, look how far we have come with technology to this point, and we are only fractions closer to understanding it then we were 40 years ago. Is it feasable that untreated and undiscovered cancer could kill 400 years from now if not treated early enough, I think its possible.

The human Cylons, do bring a extra addition of intrigue and mystery as someone alluded too earlier, but on the other side of the coin, if every Cylon was a metallic killing machine, stories would be a little less robust. Modern shows like more of the Good, the Bad, and the somewhere inbetween. We have Cylons and humans that are filling this somewhere inbetween roles. Besides all Cylons ran around in Chrome suits still, we would be bagging on the show for low budget effects from almost 30 years ago.

The mixing of political and spiritual lines in the series definetly reminds us of the human nature of the characters in the show, and helps us connect with the show on more then just the Eye Candy aspect of it. I see myself connecting with even Six on some issues, where TOS, guys with flashing LED lights as eyes were the enemy and could not do anything but hate them (Minus the Cylon Starbuck repaired).

For those who have any doubts about the shows critical acclaim, look at Time magazine article, where there TV Critic claims the current BattleStar Galactica as the best show on Television for 2005.

reply

"For those who have any doubts about the shows critical acclaim, look at Time magazine article, where there TV Critic claims the current BattleStar Galactica as the best show on Television for 2005"

Let me start by saying that this statement does little for me since most of what is on TV is crap. MOst...not all.

Now, moving on from there. I am 30. I grew up watching BSG reruns. I always loved the show and had high hopes for the new one. I hated the mini series or whatever they called the opener. I did not like the changes in the characters. Making starbuck female seemed stupid when you could just create a new character. Making Boomer a female AND asian made me feel the same.

That said, I have seen an occasional episode here and there. If you get past the changes in the characters, it's not really a bad show. I would not say it's the best show ever made, or the best sci fi ever made, but it does seem to be really well done. There are things that work and other things that don't work. I will probably check it all out on DVD one day and see how it all flows. If the opportunity were to ever arise for Hatch to make his version, I would love to see it!!! It could have been awesome! It could also have sucked.

For those who have not seen the new one, give it a chance. Not just one episode, but 2 or 3 at least. Make an opinion. For those who love this show, don't call people hypocrites because they are fans of the original and not the new one. They are TWO complete different shows with only minor commonalities. It's not hypocritical, it's preference. TO everyone else, enjoy!

I for one think that the new reimagined Battlestar Galactica SUCKS compaired to the Original, The new series has moore ( LOL ) in comon with Galactica 80!, look at it you have a total rip off of Galactica 80 with Human Cylons!, you have items like Telephones for comunication ( Not all that imaginative! ) you have Earth terms like Cancer, most or all of the Terms in the Original BG are gone, and the fact that Male characters are now Female is pretty bleeping stupid, the only thing holding the Sci Fi BG is sex, and really good CGI, that is all that it has compaired to the Original series, the actors in the show are great but they are wasting there time on this fabricated remake of a Great Sci Fi show from the 80's, Universal made the biggest mistake by not re releasing the Original Battlestar Galactica on TV or the Movies with updated CGI, and to make a proper spin off that would not fail like Galactica 80 did, any thing is posable, Apollo would be Comander of the FLEET, Baltar would not be in the Show or Series, ( because he was left on a planet with nocomunication in the Original BG, and left behind for helping the colonials attack the two Basestars!) come up with an even more intreging plot then simply do a stupid REMAKE, I have come up with a cool plot for an addition to the Old BG series that will far surpass the New reimagined one on Sci Fi!

its funny really how all of you(almost ^^) expected a quick death from TNS BSG
and it far surpasses TOS. ive watched BSG '78 just for kicks, its kinda entertaining(granted i watched to distract myself of the horrible week-wait for new BSG episodes) but TNS is so much better, in-depth, realism and for those of you complaining about phones and stuff Aaron Doral explains it in the mini-series, so far BSG is surpassing the original series in length and even tho', like i said, the original series(TOS) is good its just not up to the new series(TNS) standards. you guys should just get over the bitterness of watching your favorite childhood tv show be re-imagined instead of continued and try to enjoy the truly unique masterpiece this new, revamped, re-imagined, and better series is. Of course im saying that for the guys that are still in denial. oh and one favor plz get Spiderrevenge back on ur board so he can stop poisoning ours.

The new BATTLEstar GALACTICA totally rocks it has excellent plots great acting and brilliant special effects i loved the old series but this one surpasses it it is now in it,s 3rd season so they must be doing something right orther network would have pulled the plug long before it got this far. the original series which i watch on cable verynight has nowhere near the depth of the new one and it gets better and better every week. It has a great cast mary Mcdonnell and edward olmos both great actors and the new look cylons are amazing they kept the red eye but have updated the look of them nd it works aswell as the new look basestars they are awesome. This is one of my favourite shows and i look forward to it everyweek even richard hatch has given it his approval so much so by taking a role in the series which he is excellent palying at I hope that it runs for many more seasons and as the review in the gaurdian newspaper said it is blackhawk down meets 2001 you cannot get a better recomendation than that. STOP LIVING IN THE PAST give the new series a chance and you will soon realise that it is brilliant and is top quality sci fi

I like TOS, love TNS, but want to know what is up with the five final Cylon thing? I watch every episode but I must have missed something here. I am sick of the Apollo/Starbuck tryst. Leave it alone. What about Tigh? He had to kill his wife for frak's sake. Where is his head at? That's more interesting than two hot bodies going at it. I do love Grace Park as Boomer. Too bad they bleach Tricia's hair. Every man's nightmare - inflatable dolls that can talk back and kick your butt. Baltar has it coming to him, I hope. Knucklehead. Can they get away from the Cylons in the tub of corn syrup thread? Boring.
