Bill Petersen's awful fake southern accent

What was the reason for it? I didn't see that it added a thing. It was distracting because it was so bad. I have yet to see a non-Southern actor fake the accent successfully.

edit, you lost the civil war and that's it

How would you know you've never "seen" a non-southern actor fake "the" accent successfully.

1) if they do it well, you don't even know they're not southern, do you? you only know they're not when they botch it.

2) there's more than "the" southern accent. There are many different southern accents, just like northerners don't all speak with the same accent. Surely you're aware of that.

3) if you want to hear what a really bad southern accent sounds like, see if you can find episodes of A Different World online, which originally starred Lisa Bonet in the first season (future Oscar winner Marisa Tomei was also on the show in the first season, fwiw). After Bonet left, the show became all about Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison and their friends. Jasmine Guy (who was raised in Atlanta according to her Wikipedia page) put on what had to be THE WORST southern accent I've ever heard. I have never heard anyone else speak with the accent she used on that show.

it's pretty easy to find out where an actor is from. And, if you can tell from their accent that it isn't authentic, even moreso.

Yes, there are multiple accents. But, as with anyone else who is from a certain place, people are usually familiar with those different accents. Just like Brits can tell the different areas where people are from by their accent.

And, yes, Whitley's accent was horrible!!!!!

"Well done son, well done".

Unintentional comedy of the highest order right there.

The oft-stereotypical Southern ... giving his character the southern accent reminds of us of his "low-class" routes, but still comes off as genteel enough to fit in with the rich guys.

Well, I declare!

Yeah, it was awful.
