First Time?

I remember the first time I ever played Metal Gear Solid. It wasn't even the entire game, but just a demo, i actually think I might have gotten it at Pizza Hut as like a promotional giveaway weird huh?...Oh well anyways I was hooked immediately. The demo covered the first bit of the game all the way until the DARPA chief(Decoy Octopus) dies in his cell. I was blown away. I had never and have not seen since a game so AMAZING. I got it when it came out and couldnt put it down after that. I still remember the first time I fought Psycho Mantis, the first time I learned Miller was Liquid and the first time I faced REX. So anyone else remember their first time with what can, without much argument, be called the greatest video game ever created?

that makes 3 of us, i still have that demo disc with MGS on it, i played it over and over and over until i finally picked up a copy of the game, lol. my brother in law was the person to discover the demo for it on there. i have many fond memories of this game, i can remember i had a HELL of a time trying to beat Rex the first time through. my parents couldnt drag me out of my room for anything when i was playing MGS. The day before my senior project for school was due, i had played MGS over and over again for about 5 hours and still managed to write the final draft for my 10 page research paper, a 30 minute presentation for it and a full portfolio (complete with pictures, btw) all before midnight and recieved an A- on the whole thing, MGS was my life-saver that day :D lol.

I agree.
Definitley the best one in the series.
Amazing game.

reply

true true, the best one, not that the others were crap, they were still good.

now i always think that just because something is the first of its kind dosent always mean its the best, but MGS1 was the *beep* bomb!!! i also had the demo from my uncle(around this time he was my "cool young" uncle, you know those types?) and i loved it until my uncle got the full game for my birthday, i literally ran upstairs into my room and was a social recluse for the rest of the month trying to get all the extras(stealth camo) etc.

i feel bad for the sequals because they had to follow such a fantastic game! mgs1 was the first of its kind and after that loads of games like it came out wich made the sequals feel less "special" if you know what io mean? but none the less i feel that the sequals were great and no other "mimic" games had came out, then the sequals would feel just as special- just my opinion.

i love the way that you have to get throught the game at least twice to unlock stuff which helps keep the games from getting boring

P.S. on the demo didnt they speak russian or something, im pretty sure the guards said stuff in russian coz i used to qoute it

Yah when I got my hands on the demo my parents didten want me to have it because of the mature rating on it I fed my dads dogs for a dollar a day and saved it until I got 50$! and when I got it I played the pizza hut demo and was totally amazed I was only 12 and the mature rating was 17 but I begged my mom and dad and they took me to walmart and bought for me immidiatly I put the game in my playstation and got stuck whier the laser beams were I kept practicing and beat it all the way through the game was packed with surprises but the first ending I got was with otacon my parents helped me out in the torture room and my dad was able not to give in to the torture and I got the marel ending which was so much better it even had a advertisement in the instructions manuel to the next best game from konami silent hill I even got the stratagy guide for it and I had a girl friend named sarah that fell in love with me because I had this game I got to admit this is one of the finest games konami has ever made for the first time on the playstation and still remains a classic by todays standards

Yeah, I actually never played it on Playstation. Well, no, I did much later on a demo disc, but it was actually several years after I had beaten it on PC, and then I only managed to play VR Missions on PS (my little brother's old demo disc, actually).

My uncle bought me a copy in a 3-pack with Metal Gear Solid, Crimson skies, and Starlancer? years ago. (so, I have it on PC, and still play it. Hell, it's installed right now.) So I think I first played it not long after Christmas... and it was the coolest thing ever. Note that I wasn't great at it and it took a while to get the hang of it, though (I got slaughtered by those first two guards. >.>)
Pretty cool.
Well, no, totally wicked sick. Great game, best plot.
Anybody played Twin Snakes? I kinda want to get that, but I've never been able to. How does it compare to the original? (I've heard both good and bad about it... I've heard the voice acting wasn't quite as good as the original, though, because they redubbed it or something.)

Anyway, I went back and replayed it again, and it was surprisingly hard. It's so much harder than MGS2 and 3! Especially the fight with Rex (way harder than the multiple Rays, in my opinion), and not being able to aim in first person kinda bothered me (so I figure Twin Snakes will be much easier than the original), because it meant I had to be more sneaky around the guards, and it was harder to kill them without getting caught.

Anyway, yeah, it's a wicked game, fun times, and makes for an unforgettable first impression.

The first time I played this must have been back in 2000. I only had the demo version, but after I played and it ended when the chief died, I was hooked. I asked my mom if I could get the full version and two weeks later I had it. Defeating it took a while, but MGS is the one game I could play over and over, and never get tired of. I love this game.

I remember when I was eight, I bought this demodisc with tons of demos on it including MGS. When I boughtthe game I was hooked. My brother and I beat it ten times.

I brought this as an American import before it even came out in America, months before it came out in Europe.

reply

Aaa yeah I remember when I first had that Japanese demo, then got the real copy. I waited and waited for it :P

My first time playing it was on Christmas 2000, a year before the sequel comes out. "Metal Gear Solid" was on my shelf for about five months before I actually started playing it. Keep in mind that I've never heard of any story development at all, not a single word, so when I started playing it I was hooked from the very beginning. I was amazed by how well done the plot was, and the plot was the very reason why I couldn't put it down. When I finally beat the game (three days later), I remembered saying to myself "this is the best game I've ever played". I looked at the clock in my room and it was 3 in the morning, I was playing about 6 nonstop from the point of escaping the cell after Meryl got shot to the very end. At the time I was absolutely floored by this game, and to this day I still enjoy playing it, but not as much now that I know all the twists and turns in the storyline. Overall, "Metal Gear Solid" was a game I instantly loved, and I loved its two sequels as well (personally the third one has the best ending plotwise, but the 1st one takes the cake for being the first king of "great endings").

I remember the fist time i played it. Me and my cousin were at Blockbuster, MGS was just a couple months old and my cousin told me about it. I was not interested because I was looking for a certain game (I cant remeber which one) but my cousin insisted that i take a look at the cover, i looked at it and said "this one doesn't look fun" i only looked at the front cover. All it had was a white backround and the words Metal Gear Solid in red on it. I thought to myself "well if they dont put much effort into the cover than the game cant be that good" so i decided that i was not going to rent it, but my cousin told me not to judge a book by its cover. so i rented it anyway, but i wasn't happy about it until we got back home and started playing it. The game blew me away, it was almost like watching a movie everything about this game was perfect, the scene were sniper wolf speaks her last words to Snake and Otacon, or when the ninja is revealed to be Grey Fox, and all the other plot twists and characer development and story development and the multiple endings, i didn't think that was even possible for video games. i was so caught up in the gane that i forgot to return it, that is until Blockbuster called, so the next day i returned it and bought a new copy.

Oh man I sure do. I got my first Playstation on my 7th birthday. It came with the US Playstation Demo Disc, and my parents bought me NASCAR 97'. Well I played that demo disc. I can't remember a bunch of the games that were on there. But I always skipped around MGS. I wasn't really intrested at the time in an espionage game. Before that Playstation, the only thing I had was a Sega. Oh I remember now what it game I played on that demo. I played Medievil and Spyro The Dragon. Lol. But a few weeks later my grandparents came over and it was night time, so we plugged up the Playstation, and I stuck in that demo. Well I was flippin through the games tryin to find spyro and my grandpa and my dad almost and the same time asked what MGS was, when I flipped past it. I hadn't played it, so I didn't know. So I clicked on it. And we were hooked from the start. We messed around in the cargo hold until the elevator came down. And we went up and seen the Hind D and we were so into it. The demo ended when we went through the ventilation shaft and we were so dissapointed that it was over. I think the demo took us about 10 min. to complete. But man it seems like that moment lasted forever. It was so fun. I'll never forget it. The next week, my grandpa bought the game after work. And we put in so many hours playin that game. MGS and Silent Hill. Every weekend and then on mondays and wednesdays, when my grandpa would pick me up from school, we'd play it.
Meryl Silverburgh was my first crush man. I used to think she was soooo hot. I was so upset when she got shot by Sniper Wolf. It was and still is an awesome game.
Lots of good times with that game man.

Magic Man,
Dude, that story is truly beautiful. I'm glad I'm not alone on this. I think everybody can remember the first time they played this game.
I didn't actually see this thread before I started my own similar topic so I'll repost my story in here now and join the club.

Metal Gear Solid (Original PS1):

I remember having a 'chipped' (as we Scallywags in the UK called 'em) Playstation, and my older cousin used to get, literally, every game that came out for like, a £1. I'd seen a front cover of I think it was Playstation - Official UK Magazine, with Ninja on the front, I don't remember the title but it definatley pointed to something good.
It was a dark autumn friday night 1998, I'd done my homework ALREADY ahead of the weekend (Only time I'd ever done that). My Mum shouted up to my room that "Are Jamie" was coming down to sleep so I went down for some Indian Takeaway with my folks and "Are Jamie" came in.
The FIRST thing he said, before even "hello" or "Thank you for having me" to my parents was..."Craig, I've got the best game EVER made man!...Come on, let's go to't games room!"

So I was like "Fair Enuff!"
My parents musta been like, "Those kids are weird".
Aaaaanyways...Are Jamie cued it up, Turned off all't lights (which I thought was a bit extreme for a computer game but now I do it EVERYTIME I visit Shadow Moses) We had Mars Bar Milkshakes, Boxes of Maryland Cookies and some Wham! Bars...And then I heard something for the first time, and it sent a shiver down my little spine.
It was the "Doo-Doo-DO! - Doo-Doo-DO! - Doo-Doo-DO! - DO!-DO!-DO!" (Echoes...)

I knew I was in for something special from even THAT moment and ever since that day, I have NEVER felt that connection with a game, maybe even a movie.
(Except for maybe the Sons of Liberty realease day when I camped outside Electronics Boutique ovewrnight, but that,
as they say, is a different story.

I remember playing MGS the first day it was released; I had played the previous Metal Gears back in the day and was looking forward to this one.

I made sure I had all night to play undisturbed and was not disappointed by the unbelievable storyline, voice acting and gameplay.

To this day, there has yet to be another series that captivates like the continuous storyline that the Metal Gears do for me. As a matter of fact, every game in the series is in my permanent collection (which I only keep those games I believe to be in the 9 or 10 ratings range). :)

You know, I actually got the game about ten months ago. I never had an old Playstation before, and if I did, I'd be too young to play MGS :). I found a copy in some game store (as well as a mint condition copy of Final Fantasy VIII) and it was even in good condition! Both games ran like a dream on my ps2. Nothing could have prepared me for the fun I had. Everything, from the plot to the gameplay, really suck you in. It's really something.

I saw the game played before I played it. Back when i was 8, I would visit my 13 year old cousin alot. The only reason he bought MGS was because it was the only 2 disc game he had ever seen. I watched him play it, and became fascinated with it at such a young age. Of course, now I understand what they're saying more than I did back then. Funny thing is now, my cousin's not a fan, but I'm the biggest fan. I still have the MGS1 copy that he let me borrow to this day. It sits under my PS3, right in between the other two MGSs, Substance, Subsistence on one side with Troy and The Departed on Blu-Ray on the other. The classics have to be near each other.

I actually only found out about MGS after reading about the hype over MGS2 (this was back in 2001, i think..before it was released for PS2). I was intrigued, so I bought it. The rest is history ;)
