Just wondering what people's thoughts are on the idea that this is and was the best game ever made on the PS1. I do think so, due to the fact of it's amazing graphics, innovative style of gameplay and control accompanied by an involving storyline, great characters and voice acting and of course some of the most memorable scenes and quotes in games console history.
If not, what other contenders could there be?

This is a damn good game. Definitely one of my top 10 favorites. I also enjoyed playing Parasite Eve (anyone remember that game? lol)

Yes, this is the greatest game for the PS1. Actually, it could make the top ten list for the best game of any console. I can image, 50 years from now, this game would be an antique collectible (next to GoldenEye for the N64 of course). LOL

Final Fantasy 7 is way OVERRATED!!
Metal Gear solid IMO is the PS1 of all-time and i had some great times and memeories playing it when i was 8 or 9 when it came out.

Damn this thread took me back... I mean MGS, Resident Evil one and two and FF:VII are obvious choices, just about everyone loves them. My personal favorites were the first two Twisted Metal games and MGS. Crash Bandicoot and the first Tony Hawk deserves a mention or two. Anyone remember Blast Chamber?

Definitly MGS is the best for PSone. I think Resident Evil 2 and Gran Turismo are right up there with it though.
FF7 is definitely overrated! I prefer 8.
MGS is my second favourite after 8.

Silent Hill Anyone? This game brings back the most memories for me. I remember sleeping over at my friends house for a whole week and us playing it everyday after school right until we went to bed. I think i may go back and play through it again very soon.

What really appeals to me about metal gear solid is the atmosphere thorughout the game: Arctic base exploration,snowfields, gritty interior complex.
The plot is quite interesting, quite a number of debateable issues like: Nuclear disarmament,Genetic cloning and brotherly hatred.
Most important of all is the characters interactions esecially betwen Snake and Liquid, what a clash (identical clones!) "I got all the flawed recessive genes".
all the other characters were well cool too.

Definately one of the best, Final Fantasy IX is up there with it though. And I was absaloutely addicted to Smackdown 2 when it came out

I LOVE MGS for the PSX. This is absolutely my favorite game for the system. But I'm surprised...
since NOBODY mentioned Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Shame on you all! This is far and away one of the best games ever released for any console, period.

It certainly is one of the best. But there are just too many Playstation classics to put this one above the rest I think.
shareMGS is the classic of classics. Go to any gaming magazine, any gaming professional, anyone who knows anything about art, and they'll tell you Metal Gear Solid was the best game on PS1. I remember, a while back, on PSM's 100th issue, they counted down the top 100 games in Playstation history (this was about in 2002, or 2003, so that included PS2 games). MGS2:SOL made #4 on that list, while the original Metal Gear Solid took the number 1 spot.
Now, in terms of sheer plot and storyline, this is without a doubt, better than any game on any console, as well as most movies out there as well.

One of the best games on PSX but not the best. As for all formats at the time, it wasn't the best, that would be Ocarina of Time, as far as on PSX though, probs MGS, Final Fantasy 7&8, Resident Evil:DC/Resi 2 and Silent Hill are the games I remember most fondly.
