Other historical documentaries with a time traveled crew?

As brutal as this movie is, I really loved the mix of the mondo style with the historical setting and the in universe modern camera crew asking questions and interacting with historic people.

I’m really surprised that I can’t seem to find a single other film made in this style, or even a proper term to describe it, though I do feel like I have seen smalls bits like this somewhere.

The idea of people from the present talking to those from the past in a natural way, and listening to the subjects share their views and answer questions, seems so unique and fresh and really highlights the shift in values.

Even small moments like the scene where the cameraman lends his ballpoint pen to the 19th century gentleman are amazing.

I can only assume everyone was far too put off by the subject matter and filming conditions to copy the style which is a pity as the idea has so much potential.

You may like Peter Watkins' documentaries. I think he pioneered this style of reenacting historical events and breaking the fourth wall. I have watched only "The War Game", sort of "Threads" precursor documenting a hypothetical nuclear war, and it is excellent, especially in filming technique.
