Read this if you remembered this movie but never knew the name of it...

Ok - I, like many of you it would seem, have had bits of this movie floating around in my brain for the majority of my life without knowing from where they came... specifically I have had an image of a tree in a glass jar, accompanied by a sense of danger - I would say I have thought about this image at least three times a year and have always tried to get a title from someone, to no avail. And then tonight, at the "I Heart Video" in Austin, TX, i finally got the answer. On one of the "employee picks" shelves there were a bunch of fantasy children's movies (Return to Oz, Peanut Butter Solution, etc.)... long story short, when I asked this guy if he knew what movie featured a tree in a jar, he immediately and enthusiastically said, "Oh, yeah, the Hugga Bunch movie!" Now, it was incredible for me on a personal level to have the mystery solved, but I don't imagine that that little story is of particular interest to anyone else... what IS of major interest, or at least should be, is the fact that there are thousands of people who have had a similar experience with this movie. Why did this movie imprint itself onto my mind instead of something else? I watched a fair amount of movies and television as a kid, but no other movie stuck with me in the way that this one did... notice i said "in the way" not "as much as." I remembered other movies much more vividly than this one, cartoon TV shows more than anything, but this Hugga Bunch movie got deep into my head and sent fragments of images up into my conscious mind from time to time... almost like the feeling you get during a conversation when you've lost something you meant to say and you don't know exactly where to find it... you try to retrace your conversational steps, but you can never pull the thought out again - and yet you have a keen awareness that the thought is missing, that you haven't verbalized it yet and you really really wanted to verbalize it... anyhow, that's how this Hugga Bunch movie has felt for the last twenty years. So now I am curious... what are all these people like who were similarly affected by the same images... how and why did this movie make such an impression on all of us? so I think I'll conduct a little informal survey... it would be awesome if anyone responded to this... (I'll include my answers at the bottom)

Survey Questions for people who at some point remembered visuals from the Hugga Bunch movie, but didn't remember the name of the movie:

1. What year were you born?

2. Are you male or female?

3. Using 3 words, describe your childhood.

4. Using 4 words, describe how your parents raised you.

5. Using 5 words, describe where you grew up.

6. On average, how many hours of television or movies did you watch per week between the ages 2 and 10?

7. How old were you when you first saw the Hugga Bunch movie, and how many times did you see it?

8. How old were you when you saw your first "Rated R" movie? (and just for fun what was it)

9. What images from this movie stayed with you the most?

10. How did you finally find out the name of the movie?

If images from this movie lodged themselves into your memory when you were a kid you should take the time to fill out this little survey! I don't know if we'll find any patterns or anything, but you have to admit that it is a little too weird that so many people have been affected in such similar ways by this movie. Maybe there is something subliminal at play! ;) Ok, here are my answers...

I could never remember the name of this movie and the only images i had were the girl in a pink jumpsuit going through her mirror, her brother and peanut butter. i searched for years for name of this movie or anyone in it who looked familiar in other shows. i knew the brother was in something else but i couldnt think of it until i was watching Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and immediately recognized him. I jumped up and imdbed the movie found the brother and searched his resume. none of the shows sounded familiar and even seeing The Hugga Bunch name still doesnt ring a bell. My brother and I both used to watch it over and over and he still thinks it was called something else cause the name is escaping us but i cant wait to buy it and watch it again. Even if i am 23 years old.

1. What year were you born?
--- 1984

2. Are you male or female?
--- female

3. Using 3 words, describe your childhood.
--- loving, safe, tragic

4. Using 4 words, describe how your parents raised you.
--- Christian, conservative, comforting, laid-back (2 words?)

5. Using 5 words, describe where you grew up.
--- texas, country, swamps, grandparents, dad

6. On average, how many hours of television or movies did you watch per week between the ages 2 and 10?
--- 8 or 9, i guess? i watched TGIF and SNICK every weekend, so that alone took up 2 hours on friday and 2 hours on saturday.

7. How old were you when you first saw the Hugga Bunch movie, and how many times did you see it?
--- i guess i was like 6? i have no clue actually, that's just a guesstimate.. I watched it countless times, it was one of my favorites.

8. How old were you when you saw your first "Rated R" movie? (and just for fun what was it)
---- I was about 8 I guess, and it was Pretty Woman.

9. What images from this movie stayed with you the most?
---- I remember seeing a little girl walking around a stuffy, cramped-up house. I remember a part where the little girl is running up (or down maybe?) the stairs.. I remember a part where there was a little table and the little girl had a tea set setup on the table, I think? And I'm still waiting on a response as to wether or not I am correct about the dryer scene being in this movie? (I remember a little doll or something getting into a dryer and then someone turned the dryer on and the doll or something was in the dryer and the little girl was panicking?) I clearly remember more of the "real life" scenes from this movie than I do the "magical fantasy" part.

10. How did you finally find out the name of the movie?
---- I always remembered the name of this movie, unlike other folks in this community. I just couldn't seem to find anyone else who remembered it, and everyone I asked told me I was crazy and that there was no such movie.. so until I found this website and typed in "huggabunch" i thought it was just going to forever remain the mystery of my life.

Hi, I find it rather odd too that so many of us have had so many vivid images from the movie but still had the same problem remembering the name of the movie. For me, I think it's because I remembered the human side of the story and I remembered identifying with the child's love for her grandmother (my grandfather was my babysitter when my parents were at work). I don't think the title "Hugga Bunch" really set the tone of the movie. I almost forgot about those hug puppets until I found the title of the movie. Anyways, I'm just so glad that I finally found the movie after YEARS of remembering parts of it and racking my brain thinking about the title. I didn't realize that so many people watched it! Thank goodness for the internet. = )

7. How old were you when you first saw the Hugga Bunch movie, and how many times did you see it? I don't remember. I was probaby 5 or 6. I'm assuming I watched it more than once but not many.

8. How old were you when you saw your first "Rated R" movie? (and just for fun what was it) I don't remember. I do remember that "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" was my first PG-13 movie (it was a big deal for an 8-year-old like me. lol).

9. What images from this movie stayed with you the most? something about books, the little girl not wanting her grandmother to get old, a fruit tree covered a jar, a scary woman/witch, the fruit being magical-you wouldn't get old, something about going into a different world (fantasy world)-finally figured out that she went thru a mirror

10. How did you finally find out the name of the movie? It took me FOREVER to find the title considering i only remembered random parts (ideas) from the movie. I did a couple of internet searches using nonspecific keywords with no luck:
grandmother younger fruit book movie
movie save grandmother from getting old fruit
fruit tree glass older save grandmother
kid's movie younger fruit book
movie fountain of youth fruit book

Finally found a link to IMDB using these keywords:
movie magic fruit tree from getting older

THANK YOU IMDB!!

OH MY GOD!!! This has been annoying me for years! Over the last couple of years it's been driving me crazy. At first i thought some of the images were from The Labyrinth, until I watched it again a couple of years ago and realised it wasn't. I've asked so many people and they're all like: "What? Alice In Wonderland?" NOOOOO!

I think it's really weird so many of us had this experience...was there a guy with a really oversized head as well?

1. 1983
2. Female
3. Fun, one-parented, safe
4. Polite, sheltered, respectful, affectionate
5. Flat, small town, grandad, only-child

7. I was 2 when the film came out. Think i was about 5 or 6 though. Used to rent it quite a lot I think.
8. I was about 10 and think it was Pretty Woman.
9. Only remember the little girl going through the mirror, meeting a bookworm, knew she was looking for fruit to make her Grandma young, dropping it on the ground at the end when she trips and it all shriveling up. Didn't remember the dolls at all! I still don't. Remember the tree and the witch now that I have read other peoples.
10.Looked for sites that listed 80s children's film indexes, with no luck. Decided to Google: childrens film wardrobe bookworm fruit!
