shareThe Changeling - as good a haunted house movie as you will see.
sharei agree - house on haunted hill is great, especially famke janssen... =)
shareA bit campy, but I enjoyed the remake of Thirteen Ghosts (the one with Tony Shaloub.)
Im not sure it quaifies as a haunted house flick, though.
And Below, though not a Haunted House exaclty, does convey the FEEL of a Haunted House movie. (Claustrophobic and such).

Yes. The ORIGINAL Haunting is one of the best haunted house films ever made.
shareLOL, I think most of us can agree that The Haunting was a flawed movie (that doesn't mean that it wasn't good)... but The House On Haunted Hill? PLEASE!! I hope you are talking about the original one, with Vincent Price. The one with Geoffrey Rush was AWFUL!!
share1. The Woman in Black. In my opinion, the best Haunted House movie ever (if you can track it down) plus probably the scariest movie I've seen and im a horror junkie so i know what im talking about (but yeah, its up to opinion).
2. House on Haunted Hill (Both versions good in my opinion)
3. Original 'The Haunting'.
4. 'The Legend of Hell House'
5. 'The Changeling'
Any others added would be cool, I want to see as many as possible because they rock. except this movie, this movie sucked bad.
What about the series Rose Red (Stephen King).
share^ that was good. I need to check out more haunted house films.

See now in my opinion, they are just too low budget for my liking. It's the same story for all of his novels, I mean, they are amazing stories but they always seem to get made into cheap, low budget nonsense. The best Stephen King adaptation (that wasn't a major blockbuster btw) has got to be the new Salems Lot with Rob Lowe. Definitely gotta love that :D
"I am Switzerland!" - Bella I may not like you much, but you can be pretty funny sometimes!
"The Others," with Nicole Kidman. From 2001. There's a reason this movie is given a 7.7 in IMDB: it is genuinely creepy. As with the original "The Haunting" and other classic ghost stories, much of the suspense is psychological in nature...it's what we DON'T see that can scare us the most.

House (and House 2...wouldn't bother with 3 or 4) (80's)
House on Haunted Hill
13 Ghosts
The Shining
House that Dripped Blood (if you don't mind older movies)
Amityville Horror
Legend of Hell House
Grudge
Stir of Echoes
NIGHT OF THE DEMONS 1 2 AND 3 ....ANGELA RULEZZZZZ
shareI was just talking about this the other day... :)
So just copying-N-pasting... (these are not the gory type)...
I'd definitely suggest The Others too... Just a good ole fashioned creepy house ghost story. :)
Plot: A woman who lives in a darkened old house with her two photosensitive children becomes convinced that her family home is haunted.

I saw a movie a LONG time ago... and have never seen it since...but it left such an impression on me...I was a kid... and I SO wish TCM...or Some place...would show it again. Who knows ...maybe it wasn't as creepy as I remember...(but I think it WAS)...
It's..."The Shuttered Room"... does anyone know of this film. A british horror film...
Looking on it's imdb page...this is what someone said...
Quoting...
A couple inherits an old house in New England that harbors a dark and terrifying secret!
Creepy! This is an unfairly unappreciated and extremely effective Gothic horror flick from the late 60's. It is also one of the better attempts to bring literary mastermind H.P. Lovecraft to the screen. The acting is magnificent! Carol Lynley and Gig Young are in top form as the bewildered young couple whose arrival in the small, tranquil village seems to trigger off a series of bizarre and ultimately deadly occurrences. Veteran character actress Flora Robson is genuinely affecting as the strange old lady who seems to know a great deal more than she's telling about the secret that's hidden away in THE SHUTTERED ROOM. Oliver Reed is appropriately menacing as a young roughneck. This one is a little tough to find these days. It's not readily available in video stores, and though once popular on late night television, they rarely run it on TV. But should you be so fortunate to come across it, don't pass it up!
One creepy movie!
I found this to be a very creepy & awesome movie. Its odd to see Ford in a role like this, since he has never been in a "horror" movie before, but he does a good job as usual. Pfeiffer does an even better performance. She sees a ghost & searches for the truth. This is a creepy horror thriller with several twists & several "jump" scenes, I definitely recommend it, this movie is definitely going into my dvd collection.
very intelligent well written supernatural thriller...
I really liked it and that's saying a lot because I generally don't like Sarah Michelle Gellar, but she does an excellent job in this film. I think it's just a good movie all around.
Lots of suspense in this movie, but no gore, which is very refreshing. And there were some genuinely creepy moments in the movie and I liked that. I also liked the look of the movie... dark and atmospheric with muted colors. I found that very effective. The story itself is unique and is not predictable. It kept me in suspense, not knowing what might happen next. I thought I had it figured out a few times, only to find out I was wrong. In my mind...any movie that can keep you guessing to the end is doing something right. Additionally it gets tied up really nicely at the end.
This is one of the better suspense/thriller movies I have seen in a long time. I had low expectation going into this movie, and those expectation were shattered. If you're looking for a suspense movie with clever writing and good characters, check this movie out.
Twists make the movie particularly intriguing...
Cry wolf is without a doubt one of the best slasher movies I've ever seen, and I've seen hundreds of them. Director jeff wadlow claimed he researched the horror genre intently before making this movie, and it really shows. Cry Wolf is one of the smartest, scariest, and sexiest slashers ever created. With a diverse, likable cast...mostly talented unknowns, but a few familiar faces too (like Jared Padalecki...from the CW's "Supernatural", Jon Bon Jovi, Gary Cole).
At first Cry Wolf seems like it's going to be a traditional, straight-forward slasher movie, but soon you begin to realize that there are layers within layers, and the result is a movie that's increasingly suspenseful and intriguing from beginning to end. It would be highly unfair to give away the plot. It's appropriate only to say that I was surprised by the ending. The movie cleverly weaves in current technologies (especially instant messaging) in a way that heightens the suspense and is sure to enhance its appeal to young audiences. Great production values, cinematography and editing -- all elements contribute to a movie that's one of the best of its genre.
i have to recommed Rose Red. really good horror based on the house being the entity
shareHarrison Ford DID do a horror film prior to "What Lies Beneath"!
The Possessed (1977 TV movie)
