I'm afraid the film left me cold (which quite possibly was the intention, I realise). The main character was juvenile to an unbelievable degree. The expression here would be 'up himself' and I'm afraid that 'self' would want to be a hell of a lot more interesting to base any film of interest around.
While the variety, bravery and depth of European/World cinema is essential as an alternative to the Hollywood mainstream, I couldn't help but think 'only in France' (and yes, I believe it was an Italian book). Perhaps it suffered in translation. The storytelling possibilities around the theme of obsession – and even boredom – are endless.. this was a pure let down. The scene where, before 'granting' his lover permission to join him in bed, he makes her perform a number of useless errands around the room was laughable (except I didn't laugh) and stretched credibility utterly.
