This movie is a masterpiece

Despite its "cult" status, it's a pity this movie isn't more famous... I think it's a masterpiece. The atmosphere is perfect, the camerawork is amazing and the music perfectly suits the deranged mind of the killer.

It fits him so well that one can wonder whether Klaus Schulze wasn't actually insane too.

There is something fascinating about this movie, it's truly a spellbinding experience.

For me, it's as if the camera was the eye of the killer himself, as if his own insanity was watching him... it's especially obvious after the taxi scene, when the killer runs away in a forest.

I don't know how to explain that, but anyway I think it's the only movie with such an atmosphere, and I've seen a lot of gritty films.

"I'm afraid of myself, I'm afraid of what I am..."

Yes, it is an absolute masterclass in movie making.
Without Angst, there would be no Gaspar Noe - as he was heavily influenced by this film.

First time I watched it, I just could not believe how unique the cinematography was. The music, acting, everything - genuis.

In time, the film will be as widely appreciated as Hitchock's Psycho; of this I have no doubt.

fM.

I so agree Fruitmouse. I don't think I have seen such a realistic film since the 70's. I actually could believe the Psychopath was indeed "Not an actor!" - he was
exceptional.

What if we haven't enough voltage?
Just keep swinging at its arms.

I rated it a solid 10. It really deserves a proper release, without a doubt one of the greatest and most imaginative portrayals of a psychopath I've ever seen. It is indeed a masterpiece.

Remember when the internet was actually fun before it got hijacked by Google?

No one will even remember this movie in time.

reply

Agreed, but I do love it.

That's simply not happening. The ship has sailed. A film to be as widely appreciated as Psycho is going to have to be a big American release (in English) which is influential. It'll be a hit from day one, a box office success and perhaps quite controversial. Influence is a big factor in critical appreciation, in hindsight.

This film is stuck in the 'cult classic' realm for eternity.

Can't disagree at all with you there and I agree completely on the camerawork and mentioned this myself on a thread I did on it.
It is indeed a masterpiece and one of the few films I'd give a 10/10 to. I was blown away by it and it's an absolute shame it doesn't get its proper recognition.

I agree, I just finished watching this movie and I'm wet. LOL.

In all seriousness, I was surprised. I was not expecting this movie to turn out so well. The acting from the main lead was fabulous, and the camera angles really sold his madness well. I really loved the angles on this one.

I get it up, I get it up in the dark, I make her feel I'm not a holy man

I wouldn't go as far as calling it that because it hardly explores his psyche. But yes, it's definitely very successful with its intentions.

I love the camera angles and the cool and cold world evoked and felt viscerally. But much though I admire and appreciate the film I didn't like it. It was repulsive. but in the way a masterpiece exposing the horror of murder would be.

I give my respect to those who have earned it; to everyone else, I'm civil.
