One of Scorsese's more interesting but flawed films

Definitely underrated film in his canon of work, although it has it's flaws and it's slightly better then it's 6.8 rating on IMDB (I'd go 7.4 with this one). It's got a lot of positives and reminds me a little of another film that was underrated for years but is now seen as one of his best in 1985's After Hours. Both would make for a great double bill, as they both have that Darkly comedic absurd and other worldly feel to them that make them stick out from Scorsese's usually more grounded works.

I feel the film is at it's best when it's with Nicholas Cage's Frank and his fellow paramedics playing more into dark comedic side of Frank's night's working the streets of New York reminds me a little of After Hours a bit, personally don't think the film is as strong when Patricia Arquette's Mary storyline is front and centre (not Arquette's performance really is a issue just the film isn't as strong).

The positives from the film, Cage plays these roles in his sleep so he carries the lead role perfectly. I think the film is stolen by the likes of John Goodman, Tom Sizemore and especially Ving Rhames (the scene in the goth club with O.D is the film's highlight). Good smaller roles for the likes of Marc Anthony. Soundtrack as usual is great, with Van Morrison, The Clash, R.E.M, Johnny Thunders etc... The Editing and camera work lift a decent Paul Schrader script to another level.

But yeah not Scorsese's greatest but still one well worth checking out.
