So when was it ok to smoke in H.S.

Did any one notice how many times they showed Paul Walker's character smoking on school grounds? I thought it was hilarious. When this movie came out (and other teen movies like it from the 90s e.g."10 things",Can't Hardly Wait, etc) I was 9 and I thought 'high school was the s%&#, you can do whatever you want'. Then I got there... well enough said.

Not sure when things changed, but in the '70s there were smoking areas for students available outdoors at public high schools here in Las Vegas.

And now for something completely different...

Im from canada and graduated in 1990 back then itwas perfectly ok to smoke on school grounds as long as it was outside, between classes people would rush outside for a smoke and get back in for the next class

Up until the '90s, my high school had a smoking lounge for students, which cracks me up because in high school, about 80% of the students weren't even of legal age to buy cigs

You have to understand that it was the 1990s, and we didn't know smoking was dangerous back then.

I really hope you're joking.

It is true. Have you not seen the video where some smoking company executives got up in front of congress and said that smoking is safe? Sure, many people did not believe it, but that was the official position. You should watch the movie about the Sixty Minutes people exposing the tobacco executives. It is a movie and a true story.

I only graduated from high school in '09, but we TECHNICALLY weren't allowed to smoke on campus, but we were allowed to smoke less then a block away from campus -- our dean was always letting us know about the people complaining about the cigarette buts and that if we were going to smoke we had to be smart about it or whatever.

the filming started back in 1998.. and during the 90s in most states, you are allowed to smoke on school grounds as long as you are above 18.. besides, almost all characters in the movie are depicted as 18 and above.. it was mentioned too that freddy's character was 18 in the movie.. so im guessing his peers are the same age including paul walker's..

It is possible that smoking wasn't allowed but he did it anyway.

I hate it when I go to a hotel and can't get a sig on my beeper.

Taylor also smoked at the Graduation ceremony. I doubt she'd not have been caught doing it there.

I graduated from high school in 1999 and we used to smoke on the front oval, in the toilets etc. It wasn't allowed for juniors, but the seniors were allowed to smoke in their hangouts, but the seniors area was out of bounds for the rest of the school. Also, the teachers would smoke with the senior kids too sometimes. We knew the dangers of smoking back then too, but all the cool kids smoked!
I used to steal cigs from my gramma just so I could give them to the cool kids.

but all the cool kids smoked!

Sorry to break it to you but smoking is not cool. What is so cool but ruining your heart and lungs and getting closer to cancer. I'll take the way to keep my body healthy and a better chance for higher fitness. I guess that makes me uncool though.

The one high school I went to in '86 allowed smoking in front of the building as long as you had a note from a parent giving their permission. Another school I went to in '87 allowed smoking in the quad. Again, with parental permission. The school I graduated from in '90 did not allow smoking anywhere on school grounds. Not even in your car while pulling in. If you were caught, you were suspended. (Yes, we moved a lot. LOL)
