most emotionally haunting films

This strikes me as being one of the more haunting films I have seen in quite some time. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions besides the list provided below. I am sure there are many more, so recommendations are welcome. Cheers

1. Interiors
2. The Virgin Suicides
3. We Don't Live Here Anymore
4. Picnic at Hanging Rock
5. Lantana
6. Rebecca
7. Gates of Heaven

In no particular order:

Mulholland Drive

Bastard out of Carolina
Monster
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
The Virgin Suicides
Smooth Talk
Fargo
La Ceremonie
Frances

I'm getting depressed so I better stop there...

These are a couple of my favorite films:

Heavenly Creatures
River's Edge
Flirting
My Brother Tom (this one is hard to find but worth it)
Lost And Delirious

I'm surprised no one has mentioned American History X. It's on my top 10 list.

In no particular order as all of them are pretty haunting in their own respective ways:

Before Sunrise
Before Sunset
Closer
Splendour in the Grass
The way we were
Science of Sleep
Love me if you dare
American Beauty
Sleepers
Virgin Suicides (obviously)

reply

Donny Darko and Requiem for a Dream are the only ones I can think of.

The Virgin Suicides
Sleepers
The Outsiders
Sleepwalking
Erin Brockovich
Gracie
Selena

Great question (I have gotten some good recommendations above). Some films that I find haunting, in addition to The Virgin Suicides (many repeats):
American Beauty
25th Hour
The Hunger
Lost in Translation
Junebug
Last Orders
Cold Mountain
Children of Men
The Green Mile
Local Hero
Road to Perdition
Donnie Darko

reply

Revolutionary road is equally haunting I think. Thomas Newman's score especially. I guess that's the reason people happen to mention some of his other similar work like road to perdition and american beauty.
On another note, most of the films mentioned here are spectacular. You know a movie is great if it stays inside you long after you've finished watching it :)
