I don't understand why

What on earth possessed the people behind the series to change the story completely like this? The first two movies were tremendously successful without deviating too much from the original plot. Having read "Anne's House of Dreams" I am quite sure that a movie based on it would have been at least close to the success for the first two.

I guess the domestic life L. M. Montgomery chose for her heroine wasn't good enough?

Anyways I for one choose to forget that this movie was ever made.

Anne is still copyrighted in Canada and Montgomery's descendants forbade Sullivan from using her novels as source material for anymore movies. It's as much their fault as his.

I thought it was because colleen dewherst who played Marilla had already died. in the books she lives well past anne's marriage to gil and the birth of their children.

during anne's older childhood the cuthberts were to take in davy and dora keith, but the first movie glosses over this chapter it seems.

OH THANK YOU GOD! THANK YOU SO BLOODY MUCH!!! Basil Fawlty

Dewhurst's death wouldn't have been an issue. Marilla is there for such a brief part of the book, that they could have easily written that part out.

Btw, I agree with the OP that AHoD could have made an interesting movie. It ties with Anne of the Island for my favorite book in the series.

Or insert her with CGI 
