I liked it...

maybe a bit long, but ford was pretty cool
KST too, especially in the elevator-scene

reply

i agree, it wasn't that bad.

reply

as a matter of fact, it is a very good movie. First class!!!!

reply

Never got around to finishing it. It was painfully dull.

reply

I imagine it was painfully dull to someone with the attention span of a gnat. I would be amazed that you even started but suppose you didn't get through the synopsis on the back cover of the video either.

While I accept that you didn't like the film (which is your right) you're still an idiot for posting the same stupid comment that is on just about every imdb board for every single movie ever made. This movie is NOT one of the 5 worst ever unless you destroy all evidence of every other movie which would of course, also make it the best ever.

Please do not post anymore of these ridiculous statements when you have not seen every film ever made, you only make yourself the object of derision. I could list at least 10 movies from 1999 alone that are worse than this one.

Reread my reply. I never stated, inferred or intimated you couldn't like or dislike a movie because you hadn't seen every movie (just the opposite, in fact) but when you make such a widespread and totally inaccurate statement, you must be expect to be called on it.

Secondly, I never mentioned whether I liked the movie or not. I simply replied to some prole that found it dull and then you felt the need to stick your oar in. If you don't want to reap the whirlwind, try minding your own business or at the very least, don't resort to ridiculous generalisations.

Given your childish miss-spelling of my nick, it is obvious you are some ignorant little teenybopper who just doesn't know any better.

reply

Totally agree with you Billycan! Anyone who makes absolute statements (i.e the worst EVER) is an idiot. Plus if you go back and look at there other postings, they're ALL the same. EVERY movie they see is the WORST EVER! Morons! Imdb should audit people who have nothing but negative remarks and can them.

reply

It's not a movie that's meant to be flashy. If you can't concern yourself with the characters or the story, it surely must be rather boring to watch. So be it.

reply

I'll have to agree. I saw it at the movie theater and wanted to cry for spending my money on it. I've never actually met a person that has had anything positive to say about it though. It was just...so...boring.

reply

It is interesting to notice the broad range of positive and negative comments on this film. I believe that that has to do with the pace of the film. Seems like we are conditioned to expect fast paced, non-stop action. This film doesn't have that, but it has excellent acting and a nifty theme of Dutch's search for something to offer him closure with his wife. He seemed to find that in the apartment. Thomas didn't need it to move on. Excellent acting by both leads.

reply

I'm on the "hate it" side. I didn't even watch it all. I thought it was waaay too boring. But I'm glad others like it (as otherwise it would have been a total waste of a movie). The reason I hated it, and I think this might be true of other haters as well, is not that it was a love story, but that it was ONLY a love story. Unlike other "love stories" like Braveheart, or Meet Joe Black, or even Ever After (all of which I thought were decent) as just a few examples, Random Hearts lacked any signficant conflict beyond the love story itself. It arguably had no action, no lives or personal freedoms at stake, no significant battle of political ideologies, etc. If I'm going to enjoy a love story on film, it just has to have more to it. And I think that's true of a lot of people.

reply

Only a love story???? Did you even watch it? No action, no lives at stake??? Well Dutch was almost killed by George. Shot twice and almost run over. It was MUCH more than a love story, and had several subplots going on. I loved it and can't understand why
it was rated so poorly.

reply

Ditto.

reply

I really enjoyed the soundtrack,i listen to it all the time. but yes i fully agree with you its a lovley and great movie to see. matter of fact i am watching it right now as we speak

reply

I liked it too. To me, it was reminiscent of Anita Shreve's book, The Pilot's Wife, in that everything you think you know about a person is turned upside down.

reply

Good plot & good actors... i am surprised to see the average vote less than 5!

reply

I kinda liked it too, wasn't as bad as some people make out...

It was strange, I've seen it twice, find it strangely engrossing, but incredibly depressing at the same time. Don't know what it is about it that makes me keep watching. Maybe because the two lead actors are so exeptional. Also the fact that KST is one of those women who looks as good without makeup as she does with it.

I'm so ugly...that's ok 'cause so are you.

reply

This movie was interesting but had some really strange aspects to it. KST is not all that physically appealing and I found the chemistry (or lack thereof) between Thomas and Ford a liability to the film. It just didn't play off as very believable. Although Ford and Thomas were both very good in their roles, I thought there wasn't a whole lot of raw emotion, and I think THAT would have enhanced the characters' plights a little better. They both seemed kind of "blah" about the whole thing. "Blah" about everything from the accident itself to the affair to the brief fling, etc......

I had to watch the film a couple of times before I really got the "vibe" of Dutch's obsession. I really admire Ford's performance, I just think there was a little something missing from the script.

Interesting side note: When Kay Chandler goes out to her car and finds directions and a note from Dutch, that really is Harrison Ford's own writing on the note and map. Funny that he took the time to do that as anybody in production could have done it for him....

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I felt kind of stupid for not realizing his obsession from the start. While watching for the first time though, I kept asking myself, "Why". Why did he keep pestering her. Why did he keep looking. Why did he care so much. Why...Why...WHY?! Harrison brought out emotions through this film that I've never seen before in other movies I have watched. Maybe it was just the way he acts (which is wonderful in pretty much everything) or maybe it was something else. Anyway, by the end of the movie, I thought about it and for the next few days I watched some of my favorite parts from it and one of them happens to be when they're at the cabin on the lake. Suddenly seeing him looking at her when they were bed made me realize the look on his face. He seemed relaxed, but he also had that questionable look on his face. He was still asking himself 'why, why, why'. Again, maybe I just saw that, but the point is I saw it then. The more she talked and talked to him, he just laid there. He reacted to her kiss and then that was it. He was there...but his mind was somewhere else. And then of course the following day when they were at the lake and he was doing fine, just talking to her and then suddenly he started to ask her 'what if' and he started to break down and that's another part where I realized how hard he still was taking it. And then the hotel room scene to finish it off...when he just went kind of nuts. When he grabbed her purse and turned it upside down and everything fell out and splattered all over the counter, that's when I said, "This dude is out of his mind with obsession...".

Of course not to paint him like he was a nut case, because he wasn't. At least he came across as loving his wife completely even after finding out what she was doing to him behind his back. KST kind of just...didn't care. She found out her now dead husband had been cheating on her and she was alright with that. She kind of shrugged it off. In all fairness there was nothing for her to do about it since he was dead, but I don't know...maybe something more. I did admire her emotional strength at times.

I liked it though. Not the best Ford movie, but it had it's moments and it kept me interested. It was the first Ford movie I've seen since he did the remake of Sabrina that I actually remember a lot about. A good enough movie to get me back into the swing of things with Harrison. I also like KST, she's the same actress from The English Patient, which I thought was a VERY LONG, but good movie.

I agree, I thought it was a terrific film- well acted and the romance was beautifully unconventional and magnificently written, in my opinion. I'm glad to hear that there are others who feel the same way, after all the ugly hype this movie has gotten.

I actually sat through the whole thing. I wasn't drunk or at all. But, I can't remember what happened. Random hearts was so bad, I started to think of other parts of my life as I was watching just to keep myself awake ...

I like this movie too. No, it wasn't 'edge of your seat suspense' type fare, but it was an engaging story.

As a native Washingtonian, I thought it handled D.C. well - Sydney Pollack handled the location well, as he seemed to with Memphis in "The Firm."

reply

I really liked it too. I have no idea why the rating is so low...Good movie.

There is something about this movie that is different than any other. It's raw, it's real, it makes you angry, it makes you smile. I don't know. You can see the dynamic nature of the two characters throughout the film, especially in the end. I've seen it many times, maybe because I enjoy Kristin Scott Thomas.

reply

I am surprised that so much bad has been said about this movie. I found it very poignant and extremely romantic. The ending was sad since they were not able to continue their love affair. Movies like that always leave me with great sadness. I think they had feelings which went beyond their mutual grief and had the situation been different, perhaps they could have continued. The circumstances were different than one usually meets in a romance but the end was a classical theme of renouncing love out of a sense of duty. I loved the movie not matter what anyone says.

reply

richp-9 observed that

"The ending was sad since they were not able to continue their love affair."

A number of people believe that they were able to continue. The ending is really totally ambiguous - whether they are able to continue or not is the interpretation of the viewer. Elsewhere on this forum is was noted that in the book, they end up together, but the movie is completely indeterminate.

The great part of art is that it can depend so much on the viewer or the reader. I write poetry, and some of the meanings of my poetry, as interpreted by others, certainly are nothing that I had in mind when I wrote it. Are these interpretations wrong? No. Some writings “Ode to Billy Joe” and “American Pie” are interpreted in ways the writer never imagined.

In real life, there could be a definite point where two people walk away in a manner that would lead an observer to conclude their relationship was over, and yet they reunite.

Or, as Doc Brown said, “The future isn’t written yet.”

reply

--------------
I don't think it was duty. I think it was recognition that at this point in time their relationship was bound to fail due to so many unresolved feelings. But they liked each other a lot, and I believe they still had a future after all the grief and sense of betrayal was resolved.

i just saw the movie on DVD i loved it! i love to see harrison ford, & i love thrillers with a verry good story & love story.

It's a decent film and if they would have made less of the corrupted cops and the political stuff (Why did the director need to show his "acting talent" in like 10 seperate scenes). If they had just focused on Ford and Thomas' characters (and her daughter possibly) and even their former spouses this could have been a great film. It's not as bad as the IMDB rating suggests.

I agree, Roger Ebert said there are two movies playing, both interesting but running parallel to each other. I agreed but after watching today it's three movies, the love story, the cop story, and what type of politician she will be. What distractions.
