The "Golf Symbolism" in this movie (SPOILERS)
It's been a few years since I've rewatched this, but I love this movie. There is a lot of "symbolism" in this movie that most people (especially non-golfers) don't know about. Feel free to add on, but here is the "symbolism" that I remember:
1) The scene where Bagger gives Junuh the "jigger" and tells him it will help keep the ball under the wind is a tribute to Tiger Woods and his "stinger" shot.
2) The scene where Hagen hits a 3-iron from the beach on the 18th hole (just finishing before the water gets to him) is a tribute to Seve Ballesteros, who grew up in Spain and learned the game by hitting an old 3-iron on the beach.
3) The scene where Junuh called a penalty on himself because the ball moved is actually a tribute to Bobby Jones and his actions at the 1925 U.S. Open. Jones called a penalty on himself, which ultimately kept him from victory.
4) I believe the putt that Junuh makes on the 18th green to tie Jones and Hagen is a tribute to Jack Nicklaus and the putt he made on the 16th hole of the 1975 Masters.
