watch again,they thought it was the axe from the killings and they make the viewer think that the killer planted it there,thats why they suspected wexler.why i said the axe wasnt the same ,so why did they think he was the killer.its a kinda minor oversight.

We (the audience) saw Michelle get killed, and so know that a double-edged axe was used. But the characters have no way of knowing that. To them, an axe is an axe. Wexler has one, so they suspect him.

The killer didn't plant it. Wexler himself says that the axe is his, and it's a prop he uses in his folklore class.
