Question: Smiley and his crew

When Smiley found out that Hoyt saved his cousin.

Smiley says, " That's for getting my cousin's back. You understand this was just business, right?"

This is kind of like a Pulp Fiction twist between Marcellus and Butch.

My question is, do you think that Hoyt will associate with Smiley and his crew?

Like, going forward with Hoyt's career, I could see having Smiley and his crew on your side could be beneficial. They now have a mutual respect.

Any thoughts?

I can help...just got the dvd...back in the day, i never gave what smiley said about it being just business much thought...a deleted scene on the dvd reveals what was really going on..smiley tells jake that alonzo paid smiley to kill jake. Alonzo wanted jake burned in front of his house so his wife could see. Smiley also tells jake that alonzo could be found in the jungle, where jake goes. Cant figure out why some of the best scenes are deleted.

reply

I doubt Jake would return to see smiley.

the business line just meant, that we were only doing this because they were paid too, was nothing personal.

I think a more important question is: why did Alonzo never ask how Jake got out of that situation? Obviously he got out so it didn't matter but still, he had to wonder what Jake could have done or said to get away.

reply

I think Alonzo was more concerned with getting the million dollars to the Russians.

reply

Not really. The most important question is, did Moreno return to the money to the wallet when he found out who's it was. I think the answer is no. This needs to be resolved in a sequel. How can Smiley allow his crew to steal from his cousin and will Jake return the wallet and four dollars Moreno took?

"Associate" is an ideal word, and it is well played in the movie. While they will not be friends, allies, or meet on Sundays for tea, they will tolerate each other. Most Latino gangs have a strict code, and at the top of it is family (La Familia). Anyone who brings honor and respect to the family, is family, whether related or not. Likewise, anyone who brings dishonor, disrespect or shame to the family, is cast out of the family (and likely to have a dirt nap), whether related or not. I'm retired now, but began my career working in the county jail. The respect between jailer and prisoner is usually mutual (and necessary in that environment), and for me later, paid dividends on the street. As long as neither crosses the fine line between, it remains "business", with no respect lost, even when caught and arrested.

Also note, Smiley showed some respect toward Hoyt, when Hoyt hit him when he realized he wasn't leaving alive. Smiley saw that he wasn't weak, despite the overwhelming odds. Weakness is shame and dishonor. But business is business.

Life is tough, but it's tougher when you're stupid.

I'm pretty sure jake will leave the force or at least leave the station he was assingned to.

They won’t be associates or friends because Jake is a law abiding person while Smiley is a criminal.

Jake also won’t go after Smiley as a policeman out of respect for the mercy Smiley showed him.

I think they’ll just go on with their lives and never see each other again.
