Am I the only one who teared up a bit over Alonso at the end?

This has been discussed so many times over and over past few years, i agree that he burn out because of his EGO, but he wasn't a bad cop, especially these days, on streets of L.A., where NOONE obeys the rules, detectives like him ARE NEEDED, i felt sorry for him at the end, i really did. I will admit it, i always tear up a bit when he gets shot down by Russian scum.

he was a bad cop lol. you're weird if u cried for him

I`m aware there are worse cops than him are around irl, but disagree that fascism is needed. And I certainly do not cry for arrogant, vapid, violent sons of bitches on a neverending ego trip; even Harry bloody Callahan realized he`s doing something wrong at one point.

Oh really? So what would YOU do, if you were in his position, knowing you're going to die, because you shot some son of a b*tch who made a lot more "bad things" in his life, than yourself, what would YOU be willing to sacrifice to survive ? Don't go on ego trips with me, that's kid talking ;)

He wasn't a bad cop? I can excuse all the corrupt things and stealing money and even the murdering of Roger. But he tried to have Hoyt murdered just to tie up a loose end in his robbery. That doesn't make him a bad cop? Letting the two rapists crackheads go without arresting them, that doesn't make him a bad cop? Stopping his car in the middle of an intersection and pointing his gun at a civilian, drugging a cop while he's on duty with PCP, drinking beer while driving that doesn't make him a bad cop? What does he have to do for you to consider him a bad cop?

To quote somebody else, he was a bad cop you are weird if you cried for him

reply

You guys are hopeless case, you wouldn't see a forest, cause of the trees in front of you, and that's all said, go cry somewhere else, its clear you didn't get the point of the movie at all. Any other idiotic responses will go automatically on Ignore List, so don't bother, open your eyes and ears crackheads.

I have no real issue with his method of getting the job done. You can't stop rule breakers by sticking to the rules yourself I accept that. His arrogance and ego didn't even bother me since you need that to take on the people he was trying to bury and he's right, the world is a better place without Roger. However that's not why he did it, everything he did that day had absolutely nothing to do with policing and everything to do with covering his own ass. Breaking the rules to catch the bad guy is one thing, breaking the rules for your own personal agenda and abusing the system for selfish gain is another. He lost his temper and beat who he thought was some random guy to death. It turned out 'he's a somebody' and now he's in trouble. On the balance Alonso living may have been more beneficial to the force but I can't say I got emotional when he died.

There's a moral to this story Del Boy but for the life of me I can't find it!

I felt sorry for him. I mean, they showed his kid and all, it's hard not to feel a little sorry for him... plus he's Denzel Washington lol

Well he did seem to be a good family man. He loved his son and you might wonder if a lot of his strokes were so that he could give him a better life away from violence and corruption but that's just supposition.

I wouldn't call him a "good" family man; at the end, when Alonzo's death was reported on the radio, it was revealed that he had an "official" family--a wife and four children. Sara was just a side-girl (one of many) who happened to give birth to his illegitimate son. Also, the "caring dad" facade collapsed when he engaged in a blind shootout in the apartment where his young son was.

Yeah, they're dead; they're--all messed up!

reply

He loved his son as much as Roger... I have no doubt he would have used the kid as an escape way if needed...
I mean, if you care for your son, you don't start shooting a shotgun in your apartment...

i felt bad cuz it was denzel washington :(

I didn't cry, but it was distressing. He was a cool character.

Bottom line is he was a bad cop. I don't care what he says, you don't have to behave like a psycho gangster sociopath to be an effective police officer in the field. No tears shed for him, in fact when the entire street turned and walked away from him, I felt he got exactly what he deserved.

reply

I think most people, at least on a subconscious level, felt sorry for him when he got [sp]sprayed with bullets[/sp] at the end; even though he was odious, selfish, egotistic, corrupt and arrogant, his charisma did sort of make you feel a bit sorry for him. As for tearing up? I don't think many people would have displayed emotions like that towards Alonso; it's one thing to feel a little sorry for him at the end, but, given how evil his character was, it would be almost impossible to "tear up" for him.

Yes. That poor guy. We need more cops who totally ignores a rape that could easily be stopped. No, I don't feel that sorry for manipulative egomaniacs.
