Have you ever eaten croc or gator meat?

I am planning a trip down south and wanted to see if anyone ever ate croc or gator meat and what did you think?

Yep. I had bbq gator at a cajun style restaurant in Texas. Effing delicious.

Utah! Get me two.

We'll be in New Orleans end of December, thinking I might pass on the gator stew ewww! hubby can try, I like chicken but not chewy!

reply

Yeah in a burger as well as kangaroo and ostrich.

Also had shark once which was nice but rather freaky knowing what your eating lol.

I'm in the UK though so don't know about how Americans serve it.

I tried kangaroo and crocodile in Australia.

I tried the kangaroo several times in various places and always liked it, but how much I liked it did depend on how it was prepared. I think it is an easy meat to ruin by overcooking.

However the crocodile meat did nothing for me ... I always found it to be very greasy. Of course, that may have been the chef's fault.

I've had lots of other meats I liked, such as ostrich, emu, buffalo, bison, llama, horse, and probably some others I have forgotten about. I recommend people try horse meat, if they ever have the chance. Properly prepared, it is quite nice.

Pappadeaux here in Dallas has it on its appetizer menu. It's delicious!

Just a comment about the Pappadeaux restaurant.

The Pappas chains started with the idea to attract all the people that wanted to eat in the vicinity of what used to be known as "restaurant row" in Dallas. They wanted to attract the people looking for seafood (Pappadeaux), Italian/Pizza, Tex-Mex (Pappasitas), and steak/bbq. Those restaurants also used a variation of name incorporating ("Pappa..."). All of them had their own building, but they are essentially co-located, and in easy walking distance of each other. (at least at that location.) Part of the appeal was that location idea, since you could arrive, take a deep breath, and then decide which one you preferred on that occasion. At the time, they only took reservations for a few special dates like New Year's Eve, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, etc..

To say that idea was successful is something of an understatement. They all did very well, and expanded to other locations. I do not know whether they hired some of the best in each specialty, or if their food is simply better, but they were/are all very good.

BTW, 'novelty restaurants' was, and still seems to be a big trend in the Dallas and Fort Worth areas. Visitors in the area have commented that 'eating out' seems to be a major attraction.

I have. I had some that was rolled in cornmeal and then fried. I have to admit that I wasn't expecting to like it as I'd not liked shark or frog legs (also unconventional meats), but I was pleasantly surprised.

Very similar to chicken except in texture. The taste is sort of like white meat chicken but it's extremely moist and tender...like dark meat.

Highly recommended.

I see where others say theirs was tough. Perhaps the places they ate at didn't prepare or cook it well b/c the piece I had was wonderfully tender.

Had crocodile on holiday in Florida years and years ago. All I remember was it tasted great.

reply

I have had gator. It was years ago and I don't remember much about it, but it was great.

reply

I had gator meat about three years ago. I remember it being good, but expensive which is a big part of why I haven't bought it since. Definitely worth trying at least once though.

I'm a vegetarian, so no...but I did get a bag of "sustainably family-farmed 'gator meat treats" for my dogs. They said it was good. The little Beagle with the "crocogator" toy especially liked them. xD

yep it was pretty good

yep, i live in Niceville, Florida and we have whats called The Mullet Festival around october or so, and they usually always have a stand serving gator on a stick. the one time i went, i got to try it. honestly tastes just like chicken.

as for shark on the other hand...very oily and nasty tasting. this might have to do with the way it was cooked, but yeah not the best.

Thanks for the link! I've only had it twice but I really like it. It doesn't taste like chicken to me, but maybe that's because chicken is one of my favorite foods so nothing tastes like chicken to me. LOL
